I went a decent high school in the burbs of chicago. Nobody wanted to go Chicago, and nobody did.
It's a school for rigorous nerds.
Notre Dame is overrated as hell because of Irish Catholics.

Re: Why ND's Mediocre Ranking?
Before hearing about the USNews law rankings, I thought Harvard, Yale, and the Ivy League were the crème of prestige―which turned out to be right.
I undoubtedly thought ND was up there in status, ahead of schools I knew little about, i.e., Chicago, NYU, UVA, etc. But USNews redefined prominence with their branding of the T-14.

Re: Why ND's Mediocre Ranking?
I know people who think that Duke is just a good school if you want to play basketball. Most lay prestige comes from regional branding. If you are on the West Coast you know that UCLA and UC Berkeley are a big deal. If you live in the South than you know about UVA, Vanderbilt, and Duke. I'm sure you get the hint. Heck, to be honest most of the people I know couldn't actually name any of the Ivy league schools outside of HYP. I also have to chuckle that the Ivy League distinction is actually a sports one in the first place, which really just emphasizes how much lay prestige has to do with athletics.Addy wrote:Before hearing about the USNews law rankings, I thought Harvard, Yale, and the Ivy League were the crème of prestige―which turned out to be right.

Also, I refuse to believe that there is a place in this country where Harvard lacks lay prestige.

Except its not a bell curve. Its not even close to a bell curve. It's more like an exponential curve. I go to a T20 peer of ND and I'd call it above average. You gotta keep in mind that 75% of law schools are atrocious dumps. Probably have good professors, nice campuses, and mediocre students, but for job prospects, they are dumps.ColtsFan88 wrote:In my opinion some people do not know the definition of mediocre in this thread. When I tell people I go to Wash U... they ask me how the Huskies are playing these days.
Sucks.
Plus it doesn't help me get laid anywhere outside of STL, which was the whole reason I went to law school in the first place. Fail.

Once, as a test, I asked 5 doods my office (all college educated, lived in Chicago their entire lives) where Wash U was. I got 3 Washington State, 2 DC, and 1 what is wash U?schwar46 wrote:When I tell people I go to Wash U... they ask me how the Huskies are playing these days.

Re: Why ND's Mediocre Ranking?
The last part is definitely true to a certain extent. I'd say most of the kids at Nd undergrad truly wanted to go to ND above all places. It has a certain draw to it that makes it different than anywhere in the country. It doesn't fit into that little group of elite northeastern schools that if you don't get into one of them you can find a dozen more like it. It's a destination school. Almost everyone I know chose ND over higher ranked schools. I didn't even think about Hopkins or Cornell, my roommates from last year gave up Columbia and Chicago. I don't think this extends to the law school though and definitely don't want to stay for another three years unless it is entirely free or our next two recruiting classes are absurd.BeerMaker wrote:"Am I misunderstanding, or are you really saying ND has more lay prestige than the University of Chicago? How can I be the first person in this thread to point that out? What lay people do you know BeerMaker?"
I would wager that, outside of Chicago, a majority of U.S. college students would assume ND is a better academic institution than Chicago.
Chicago is not an Ivy League school and so they do not get the media attention of NYU, Cornell, etc. In fact, I am watching a RedBox movie as I write this. It's some movie with Rees Witherspoon and the vampire dude from those popular middle school girl movies. I'm too tired to get up and look at the name, but it's about a circus and an elephant or something. Anyway, the vampire dude went to Cornell in the movie. This is a prime example of what the lay person is exposed to. How often do you see or even hear the name University of Chicago mentioned?
You are correct that it doesn't really matter what the lay person thinks. ND gets a lot of attention from the lay people.
I graduated with a kid who chose ND over Harvard, Princeton, and Yale among others. His reason: his mother could not be talked into believiGoing to sleepng that Harvard was better than Notre Dame. In small town America, especially in the mid west, the name Notre Dame gives people a hard on for some reason.

Agree 100%. I'm going to be attending a T14, but I hope and pray I never descend to the level of snobbery that would consider ANY T1 law school "mediocre".Hjones33 wrote:I know this is TLS, but since when is 23rd rank mediocre? Re: Why ND's Mediocre Ranking?
Dude, there are plenty of schools ranked in the top 50 that are mediocre (not saying ND is one of them because I honestly know absolutely nothing about the school). And I'm not even close to being snobby. It's just the truth.Moultdog wrote:Agree 100%. And everyone trolling ND's job prospects . . . wait for this years NLJ data. They are going to take a spill because chicago, it's largest market, is so fucking TTT. I bet their NLJ% will be sub 10% this year.

Go look at the ND threads from 2009. It was a fucking disaster at Chicago market feeder schools. Most firms weren't even going to schools like ND, UIUC, WIsconsin, and WUSTL. A lot of the big Chicago firms only recruited at HArvard, Chicago, Michigan and Northwestern.johansantana21 wrote:Oh, your trolling tickles me so hard.Desert Fox wrote:And everyone trolling ND's job prospects . . . wait for this years NLJ data. The number of SA's in chicago was cut into a third of the number in 2008. It's safe to assume ND's placement got cut into a third as well.
There were reports that significant portion of ND's law review got shut out.

Again this is anecdotal, but speaking of ivy lay prestige, anyone else notice Cornell seems to be right behind HY in terms of Ivy prestige/name recognition at least? Don't know if its because of Andy Bernard or what. When I tell people I'm applying to Cornell I get a lot more impressed looks than I do when I say I'm applying to Columbia (not to mention non ivies like Chicago etc)

I think its because I live in the south, so people around here are more unfamiliar in general with ivies.johansantana21 wrote:No it's not.westinghouse60 wrote:Again this is anecdotal, but speaking of ivy lay prestige, anyone else notice Cornell seems to be right behind HY in terms of Ivy prestige/name recognition at least? Re: Why ND's Mediocre Ranking?
I am not going to apply to ND. This forum convinced me otherwise a long time ago. However, the topic of lay peoples perception fascinates me.
As a Detroit area resident I can tell you that Michigan is all the rage here. It is mostly about football though. I bet if you asked any of my buddies growing up if UM was a better school academically than ND, they'd disagree.
If you told them UM was better than Cornell, Vandy, or Duke, they'd bust a gut. If I told them ND was as good as those schools, they'd probably accept it.
