Ex post facto 'Why X' Essays?

Post by danielhay11 » Sun Nov 27, 2011 2:59 pm

I did not submit 'Why X' essays with my applications, and I am beginning to regret this. Would it be wise to submit the optional essays now, or is it too late to matter?

(From what I understand, Why X essays are unnecessary at HYS and even CCN, but I am considering writing essays for MVP and below.)

I submitted at the beginning of November, but due to LOR delays (read: slow LSAC processing), most of my applications didn't go complete until around the 17th.

I'm not sure about your specific question, but I know that they are important at Michigan. I would at least send one there. Not sure if you applied to Northwestern, but it's important there too.

Write and submit additional essays at Penn and Michigan. Don't waste your time with UVA unless you really want to go there (you're unlikely to get in with or without the essay, they YP like crazy for out of state).

You might be able to get off PR at Duke if you write one too. Again, only if you're really interested in going there.

I wrote Mich and Penn because they requested as supplement essays. I did not write for UVA and Duke because they did not request. Got in all. There is something to be said about putting the effort to write them - if they are good. But it isn't unheard of to get in without (to all 4).

That said, if you want to write them, send them as updates.

I sent at least four significant updates to Michigan after going complete and being waitlisted last year. They welcomed the updates and added them to my file.
