Honest explanation about your own situation does not hurt. The most typical answer of low GPA with upper trend is that higher gpa more represents my academic success in law school blah blah,,,you know what I am talking about...

I think its a good sign that they wanted to find out when really they could have just rejected you, so thumbs up there. In terms of an explanation I think being honest and saying you didn't transition well into College should work fine. They should understand that not everyone adapts well rightaway but be sure to note that your perseverance has paid off and that your GPA has gone up. I think the fact that you knew yourself well enough to change majors and improve performance bodes well. Any tips on how I can address this? I didn't transition well to college and since switching into my new major, my major GPA is 3.2 (still not great I know but better). Basically I just never really committed myself to my studies but I don't want to put it like that in the explanation.
And should I take this request as a good or bad sign?
