Fucking shitbag, new corps, stress-card having pussies are so busy with garrison bullshit like 13 years of continuous war that you never learned how to shine shoes, starch uniform, and sew patches. The OLD CORPS would chew you up and spit you out!1!1!! You wouldn't survive one minute on a peacetime stop at a Philippines strip club, do you even shore leave, bro?

Interesting news regarding scholarship reclassification. The school I'll be attending offered me $15k, but said that I needed to find out how to have it paid on top of the GIB. I called the VA, and after a long discussion, found out that the VA pays exactly what the school submits. In other words, EVERY school can convert scholarships. All they have to do is apply it after information has been sent to the VA and it will go into your account as an excess. There really is no need to reclassify it as "cost of living," or otherwise, for VA purposes. A simple annotation on your student account naming it something other than a tuition scholarship would be preferable. Any university that says they can't probably just isn't aware of the procedure, or doesn't want to deal with it. Keep this in mind when negotiating.
So if I understand what you're saying, according to the VA it's simply a matter of having the school submit the bill to the VA and then, after that's paid, apply whatever school scholarship money is available? I'd think the VA's policy of being the last payer would cause them to frown on that. But unless the school is required by law to let the VA know what scholarships it has awarded (are they?), I guess there's no way for them to keep track. And if the school automatically deposits any overages into your bank account on file then you'd be good to go. Does anyone else have any experience with getting scholarship money applied after the VA has paid? Thanks for sharing this, BNA.
I considered the same thing. It seems like this avenue is sidestepping the VA, and puts either myself or the school at risk. I asked several times, and the lady consistently affirmed that the school is allowed to pay after the request for funding is sent. Also something to keep in mind - we're dealing with a government agency. Every one of us knows what comes of that. I'd advise everyone to do their own research, but thought some out there would like to hear some good news.

That's good to hear. I called the VA rep at a state school I applied to the other day and she said she'd call me back when she confirmed my benefits remaining so I'll have to bring this up and see what she says.
I spoke with a rep yesterday. All scholarships for tuition and/or fees are supposed to be applied by the school before the balance is sent to the VA. So if your school doesn't reclassify and omits information, they are putting themselves at risk. Also, if it's discovered after the fact, it may be considered an overpayment, which can be collected from you or the school.

Re: Vet Bump

I have received a major bump and got into HCCNPBNG/V. Still pending at S and WL at D. There is no way that it's URM status because people with my #s and higher (non vets) didn't get into them. As far as $$$$$, I received next to nothing with the exception of 2 schools and that's only because of what I want to study (their deans like the field). TBH, I think the only reason why I was accepted into most of the schools is because of the field I want to study. It came up in every interview, letter, etc.

I have to thank a Senior Chief for forcing me into a career of IT/CTN work because I was all about being a Yeoman. lol.

Dino that is awesome!

I am T14 WL'd. I know it's because of my LSAT calculated GPA. Nothing more I can do about it. I already tweaked it as much as I could and yelled and cursed. Nothing left but deal with it

Being a vet does give a soft boost not for patriotic reason but the experiences and maturity a vet brings to the class mix.

There are probably several different reasons there is a boost, be it in admissions for some or scholly numbers for other. Diversity, maturity, gold ol fashioned jingoism, who knows? All I know is that when I got no-offered from my firm I had to bite the bullet and start slowly turning on the "I'm a vet" guilt to try and get a job. Ultimately, it doesn't matter why people do it so long as they do it, imo.

Just a quick update on Yellow Ribbon for the upcoming school year: Northwestern is now unlimited/unlimited, meaning every vet who attends with 100% G.I. Bill eligibility will attend for completely free (tuition & fees).

This puts the entire T14 minus Yale and GU now free. I have no idea if those two school are planning a bump. Also, with the new law all vets will get in-state tuition at public schools going forward as well.

I'll update the spreadsheet and post it in early June with all the updated numbers + BAH rates for the top ~100 or so schools.

Bottom line: things are trending very well financially for vets choosing to attend law school.

Thanks for the update and your work on that spreadsheet! Has been an invaluable tool as I navigated the admission process. Once I get to GULC in the fall - Im going to try to work from the inside to get them to join that "completely free" list.

This is exactly what I did at NU. Had a meeting 2 weeks ago with the decision makers. Presented them with the data on their peer schools (they're all free), especially the trends over the last few years. They were uber-receptive, had another meeting among themselves, and made the change.

I was surprised at how pleasant the whole process was. Go do work at GU!

Wow! Thank you so much MT Cicero, you are amazing! With a 2.8 GPA my only shot at a T14 is to be a high splitter and even then I think Northwestern is my only real shot. I really want to do a JD/MBA but was worried about the high cost since Northwestern Law wasn't free and neither was their business school. I just got off the phone with them after reading your post and they said veterans in the JD/MBA program will have their tuition fully covered for their three year program under the Yellow Ribbon Program! This definitely catapulted Northwestern to the top of my list and hopefully I can make it happen. Back to 7sage for now!

Yeah, your GPA beats mine, so knock the LSAT out of the park and you have a good shot for sure.

I appreciate all the kudos from you guys, but there's certainly nothing like a little self-interest for that extra motivation!

If anyone is going to be at NU's ASW, reach out with a PM.

Depends on what year it is. We get a new identity about every 6-9 months.

The pre-deployment speeches are really the best though. By the end, the finance guy who spends 4 months in Abu Dhabi rocking that 9-4 schedule (with a hour lunch) internalizes the Airman's Creed, puts on his war paint, and gets ready to lay waste to all enemies.

Yep. It's almost certain that there is an inverse relationship between someone's description of how "in the shit" they were and reality. Snake eaters who kicked down fucking doors minimize their role whilst the guy who couldn't fix my CAC certificates starts filling out his medal paperwork on day 2 of his deployment and keeps a "war diary."

Many face palms.

Sadly, in the decade since I've been out, the ones who got the absolute worst of it never mention it. They just kill themselves.
