They will only look at your highest score in this range of schools.

I believe only a few of the really top schools average scores. Maybe if you had a string of nine 135s stretching back to 1997 and a single 162, they'd look at you differently, but an 8-point jump won't hurt you.

USNWR doesn't take your lower score into account so neither do law schools. Congrats on the jump.

This, law schools are USNWR whores... when they changed so schools only have to report their students' top scores, law schools started only looking at highest score.

Don't worry about it so much; be happy with your improvement. Check with your schools to make sure that they don't want an addendum of some kind explaining this jump (some want one explaining any jump 5+ or higher) but they should automatically consider a 2nd go-round as being testament to better studying habits.

You can say you got sick, but definitely don't get that specific.

But TBH, "I got sick for one day" isn't that great of an excuse without a "real" illness or injury.

What about "I had diarrhea?"

What part of "don't get specific" was unclear? Adcomms don't want to read about you getting the shits. Neither do I, as a matter of fact, but it's too late for that. :|

So what's the verdict? Should I apply to some of the schools in the 160-164 range or stick to the third tier places?

Thanks again.

Apply to the schools in the 160-164 range. However, try to focus on schools with a median of 162 and less, especially if your GPA isn't above the median or 75th percentile for the particular school. These schools will likely be your "target" schools.

You're applying to professional school; can we aim for some semblance of being an adult?

FreeLolita wrote: But come on, they see all your scores regardless, and you are delusional if you think they won't take your lower one into account as well. Most if not all schools either average your scores or use some algorythm to compound your multiple scores.

You give a very forceful opinion for someone who clearly knows nothing about what you're talking about.

Why short sell yourself? Apply to schools within your 162 score range.

Really, don't worry about it.

And don't apply to third tier schools. They're not worth attending except in some rare situations (ex. it's the only law school in your state).

Let's see if we can deduct the verdict...

Also:

Spend more time fixing that and less time worrying about whether the schools will average your score. For the most part, they won't. They'll all read your personal statement, however.

Why isn't anyone telling this person to retake?

You have a 3.82 GPA. Don't waste it on a shit school. You've got another retake, use it.
