Here is a list of deposit deadlines from last year:

If you don't submit a deposit by the deadline (usually mid April-early May) you lose the spot. Some people will deposit at more than one school to keep their options open, but by the second deposit deadline in June double-dipping is no longer an option.

There's a deadline to pay a seat deposit to hold your place in the class (I think this is binding at some schools, but some allow you to deposit at multiple schools). The date varies by school but is generally in April.

I think the deposit is binding at some schools (i.e. you don't have to go there, but you can't go anywhere else).

If you don't go to a school where you paid the deposit, yes, you lose the cash. It can be a gamble, but in that case you're paying the $500-750 to guarantee yourself at least a seat at School X while waiting to see if you get off the waitlist at School Y or Z.
