What is a "Why 'X' essay"?

Post by oliver_h » Tue Jun 28, 2011 8:46 am

I've noticed some talk in the personal statement forum about a "Why 'X' essay". Currently, my personal statement dedicates about two sentences to "why I want to attend 'x' law school". Obviously, I will change the reasons for applications to different schools.

Two questions:

1. Is a "Why 'X' essay" a separate essay from a personal statement, or just a type of personal statement that is focused on why one wants to attend a certain law school?

2. If it is a separate essay, is it good to submit one even if the school does not ask for one?

Thanks.

1. It's usually a separate essay. Some schools love hearing about how great they are. I know Michigan and Penn used to require them, but now I think they're optional and encouraged.

2. If the school doesn't mention one, I wouldn't bother writing it.
