So softs may not save you- but how much does lack hurt?

Postby imjustjoking22 » Wed Jun 15, 2011 7:10 pm

Ok, so if softs don't help LS applicants much... then, well, like the title says.

I haven't prepped at all for LS (I was pre-vet for a while, and the only work I did in college was related to that) in terms of extra-curriculars/ job experience/ etc. Am I going to be at the bottom of the pile because I have very little in that regard, or will my LSATs and GPA just stand on their own? (assuming I have a halfway decent PS- some hardship, etc but I have not cured cancer or started a business or anything remotely like that).

The general idea I get is that despite the occasional statement to the contrary, law schools really only care about your GPA and LSAT because those numbers factor the most into their ranking. If your LSAT is a 170 and your GPA is 3.8, you will have a better shot than the guy with a 160 who cured AIDS and cancer on the same day, then negotiated peace in the Middle East.

It's going to hurt you more at reach schools/target schools than at schools where your numbers automatically qualify you.

To which schools/caliber of school are you applying? That will also make a huge difference.

No idea yet, since my LSAT score shifts the schools that would accept me so considerably. I haven't even set a target yet... thinking I will do that once I have enough prep tests under my belt to give me an idea of my average.

But not top 10 or anything... I'm thinking my reaches will be somewhere in the 20s (as in, top 30 schools).

You can always start volunteering somewhere now. It will look like you just did it to throw something on your resume (which is the truth), but if it plays into what you were going to say anyway with your PS, you could write something about how it went from just a volunteer project to fill up time to a meaningful moment in your life.

...ideas?

I'm starting my job search when I get home in July, but I'm thinking I won't have much in the way of free time between LSAT prep, GRE prep, developing my writing sample for grad school and doing all my apps...

Maybe I could throw in a few hours/week volunteering somewhere. Hmmmm.

Umm. Well, obviously hyperbole aside... ehh. If you can negotiate peace in the Middle East (any part of the Middle East), you're probably showing up on people's radar.

...if we took all of the hours/brainpower collectively used to study for the LSATs that could probably be achieved. haha.

do they check

and how would they?

What if you wrote you were president of your own company for 4 years and it was called Cupcake Land. And you claim you sold cupcakes professionally (but you actually "sold" them to family and friends).

How would they check? If they asked for proof, since you are the president, can't you write a letter confirming yourself?

....or something along those lines..
