I have heard that school is not always accepted as a valid excuse. I already have scholarship/apartment and all set up. I am trying to get in touch with the clerk to figure out but she is in court all the time. So I come to TLS... hah. Will they make me defer it to winter break or next summer? How would that affect internships?

(hoping for the, "They will let you off no problem" answer)
depends on where you live, probably. i'm in georgia, and they just deferred mine a year.

well, i got jury duty my freshman year when i was at georgia tech, and i showed up for it on the first day. when they got to me in the roll call, i said i was a full-time student, and they let me off. didn't have to defer. they didn't ask for proof or anything.

this time, i wrote in with an excuse (and a copy of my transcript and such), and got deferred.

You should arrive at the courthouse wearing a wedding dress. Make sure to rub feces over your face for good measure too. That should make you appear mad enough to be relieved of jury duty.

I got a jury duty notice while in UG and just told them I was at school and they said I was off to hook...no deferment or anything

I've had them come to my parents house a couple of times during UG. I just had them check the box that I don't live there, send it back and it isn't an issue. You could also try sounding incredibly biased about the case if you do get as far as selection.

-No, I don't believe that anyone is innocent until proven guilty. The defendant is here for a reason.

-A preponderance of the evidence is too small a margin to decide a case on.

-I wouldn't follow the judges instructions if I didn't agree them. But don't worry, I'm a 1L so I KNOW the law...

Law school is all about magic words. In this case...

"I believe in jury nullification."

I just asked for a deferment until November. Will my summons get deferred again when I'm back in school?

Why would you want to get out of it. You'll never get to serve on a jury once you start law school. This could be your only chance!

It would have worked out if my summons had come earlier, but the clerkship application season starts the week I'm supposed to report. :(

Yah, but even if you had managed to scheduled it in, law students and lawyers almost always get knocked off during voir dire.
