How important is Orientation week as 1L

Postby things fall apart » Wed May 11, 2011 5:55 am

I have a job overseas and once I figured out the school I'd be attending I found out it'd be pretty difficult to leave the week of orientation(seeing as my replacement is also starting that week).

How important is this first week? Will I miss out on a lot of the social interactions and whatnot if I miss it or is it all right for me to head straight into class?

I plan on emailing someone on staff but wanted to see what the consensus was here.

I don't think it is particularly important in the sense that you will miss anything earth-shattering by not being there, but I believe it is often mandatory that you attend. So I think this is a question to ask your school, because you may need to be formally excused if you absolutely can't make it. (I realize you indicated you are planning to contact the school).

I would have rather not gone, but once I found out it was mandatory it really was no longer much of a decision for me. I don't remember if they even took attendance at the events, but I think at some they may have. If they had said it was optional I prob wouldn't have gone though (and I don't think I would have missed much).

The orientation program itself isn't all that important (although it typically is mandatory). There is something to be said for the social interactions, though. Cliques tend to form early.

A lot of hanging out, going to events, going to little programs about how law school works. I felt my schools was way too long but I liked hanging out with new friends.

I skipped it and went on a rock climbing trip. No regrets.

Answer to the question: Less than 0. Some will argue that u start friendships there, but I hardly talk to any of the ppl I talked to during orientation save 1 person who was in my section who I wanted to sleep with but probably never will.

Orientation itself was stupid, but I was glad I was there for the social aspects.

It was a pain in the ass, mostly because I had already gotten my CTA pass and school ID. I also still don't have a driver's license.

And no, there's actually one near school - on either Ohio or Ontario, just east of Michigan.

Ah weak. If I haven't already said this, you guys should go get martinis at Hugo's Frog Bar. I claim no responsibility for what happens afterwards.

So what happens if the orientation is mandatory but you don't go just cause you don't want to?

Yeah, although we had "mock" classes on that Friday and one of our professors decided to make it a real class. Not sure I'd want to start out behind already. Also, where we sat in the mock class became our real seats...so not sure I'd want to miss the chance to choose either.

The chances of you passing Character and Fitness after you take the bar range from slim to none.

Also, what kind of a name is "Adonai"? Imagine what would happen if someone on TLS tried to call themselves "Allah."

Seriously.....

+1. For one who pretends to be tolerant, I laughed pretty loud.
