urgent: how many pass/fail can i take?

Postby futurehero » Wed May 04, 2011 6:30 pm

I am referring to the classes for which letter grade is offered but I choose to take for pass/fail.
My prelaw advisor said I should really really avoid taking any classes in pass/fail. I have two pass/fails so far.

I got B+ for my midterm essay in history class, and I see no possibility of increasing my score. I will probably end up getting B+ or A- at maximum but even A- sounds too optimistic.

Does pass/fail significantly hurt my chances in top law schools? or does B+ hurt it more? ahhhh i need to decide asap because grading-basis change deadline is coming up soon. help me

What's your GPA currently? If a B+ lowers your GPA i'd take it pass/fail.

Just take it pass/fail. Taking a lot of pass/fail isn't really a good thing, but it's exponentially better than bringing down your GPA.

TITCR. Nothing is worth a hit to the GPA, except increasing your LSAT score, or curing cancer.

Also, your pre-law adviser's advice is a gross simplification of things. First, course load is a soft, albeit one of the more important mundane softs imho. Second, number of pass/fail courses does not matter. I took plenty of pass/fail courses; I don't have the count off hand, but let's say 6 or 7. But I took 20-24 credits of letter grade courses. I am extremely confident no one held my pass/fail courses against me. I wanted to learn some unrelated crap, and I wasn't going to put my GPA on the line for it.

Grats on the 4.0. Graduate with it--it looks pretty and law schools will like it.

They could care less. I had all of my generals done in ungraded CLEP/DANTES tests and no one cared. That was like 16+ credits or something ridiculous like that.

Definitely take it pass/fail and preserve your 4.0
