Is being a lawyer tedious?

I need to decide on a career path. I've got a high GPA and I need to decide between a PhD and a J.D. I know with a PhD I'll be all but guaranteed a middle class existence at best unless I become a leading scholar in my field and publish a bunch of books on 20th century American Literature. However, I think the workload of a professor is a whole lot easier and something that suits my personality.

I'm laid back and I can't be working too hard. I'm way too young for that.
I don't want to work 90 hours a week and have all that pressure on me, that's stupid.

With law, you get your J.D. in only 3 years as opposed to 6 for the PhD and if you graduate high enough at a T14 you'll get a really nice paying job more than likely. The thing is that I've seen some of the people on this forum and I cannot imagine having to work with these nerds.

So can you give me a little bit of career advice? I'm not even interested in law, I just think it'd be easier to use my URM status, high GPA and whatever LSAT I get to get into a top law school than it would be to get into a top PhD program in English Lit.

Another concern is that I need to impress the girl I like. I told her all about my aspirations and I've convinced her that I'm going to be a big shot. What should I tell her?
And I really LOVE sports car like the Dodge Viper and want to buy something along those lines but I need a job that can pay well enough so I can do that. Other than that I'm not a big spender.

Seriously? No, don't go to law school. It is a lot of work, jobs aren't guaranteed, and the money isn't that great all things considered. I'll give you that jobs aren't great for literature Ph.D.'s either but at least it should be free. Finally, in regards to you lady friend, if you can't get it in now, going to law school probably won't help that much.

Not trolling.... Being dead serious.... I've come too far in life to spend my adulthood working insane hours.... I need to be at home playing video games, watching movies and spending time with my girl (assuming she'll date me after I tell her that I'm not really interested in law school)

lol.. interesting troll-like formation

obv prob a troll, but take the LSAT to see if you have a shot at T14 before considering it an option..: high GPA even with URM status will have limited utility if you can't hit a minimum LSAT (not going to speculate on what that minimum would be).. Also I wouldn't count on being toward the top of your class unless your LSAT is over 75th%tile for given school (and even then obv it's not a guarantee of being high in the class).. To make big bucks you will be working hard.. Good luck and keep on trolling.. um Trucking!

He's thinking if you're this bad of a troll, you'll be an even worse lawyer. Lawyers are like trolls with fancy credentials. You're going to need to step up your game here.

Get a JD and go into politics. A JD is required to go into politics. Politicians are pimps. Do it.

You are pretty much guaranteed to end up teaching at a shitty school and not getting tenure with that attitude.

The successful professors and PhD students I know (in a different field) all work their asses off.
I don't believe you. All I got to do is get into a great PhD program and Ima do my thing. No clerkships, no briefs, no getting dominated by the partners. Ima control my destiny, homie.

Also.... I am a hard worker if I put my mind to it, even though I like to keep things on cruise control 8)

Politics are awfully uninteresting. They need to take those CSPAN channels off of TV... someone could die of boredom!

Just buy some Extense. It's way cheaper and you should see results quicker than 3+ years from now. If that doesn't get her motor running, you might want to bark up a different tree.
