Applying to Harvard Kennedy School (w/ HLS) w/o much WE?

Postby mtrl » Sat Oct 30, 2010 11:09 pm

I'm really interested in doing the JD-MPP at Harvard. I'm two months out of undergrad which I've mostly spent doing LSAT prep and applying for internships. My full-time work experience is pretty limited. My numbers (3.94, 177) are pretty much as good as they can be for HLS so I'm all set to apply now, but since I don't have much work experience I'm wondering if I should apply to HKS now or see if I get into HLS and then apply once (if) I'm there. It seems that HKS places a huge emphasis on work experience. Can anyone comment on this situation?

I have a few friends at the Kennedy School with 0 work experience, so it's possible. If i were you I'd just apply now and try again if they reject you. I've heard that HBS is easier if you're at HLS, so maybe the Kennedy School is the same. Don't you need the GRE? should probably try to dominate that in the mean time.

Thanks for your advice. However, I guess I'm wondering if I have anything to lose by applying this year. Let's say I don't get in to HKS but do get in to HLS, and then apply to HKS next year; does the fact that I have one prior rejection on my record make me less likely to get accepted?
