can you guys give me some ideas
one of my recommenders and i have a really good relationship
im pretty sure he wrote a great letter
and i want to get him something nice, classy, etc
he's prob in his 50s or so

Hooker.

If you're over 21, a nice bottle of wine or his preferred liquor.
Does he have any hobbies? What does he talk about?

It's trite, but I got my LOR writers a treat box thingy from Harry & David. (It helped that I drove past the outlet mall with the H&D store on my way back from the LSAT.) Who doesn't like truffles?

So, my undergrad has rules against gifts from students to professors. Should I just get a card or something? How important is this gift thing?

So you want to give him a gift only if you get into a school? I thought you were trying to thank him/her for writing you a letter of rec.

Two of my LOR writers are women (former bosses), one in her mid 30s, one in her late 40s, both very fashionable and wealthy and want for nothing. One is Mormon, so alcohol is out for her. I work for a retail conglomerate and receive a 40% discount across the company; I plan to use that to buy them accessories from our high-end brand. But, I know them both well and know their tastes.

Think about what he would appreciate. It doesn't have to be expensive, just nice. For example, you could get him gourmet coffee or homemade cookies.

All that's really neessary, though, is a personal, handwritten thank you note.

I actually did this. I too had a very close relationship with a professor that I had taken over 3 classes with. I gave her a $25 American Express gift card so she could get whatever she wanted. However, before I gave it to her she made it clear that she could accept no such gift because it would be unethical since I was a student and she was my teacher. I gave it to her anyway and said that it was "from a friend to another friend". She smiled.

I got thank you cards, handwrote a note, and included a $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble.
