I might apply to UVa early decision.

Let's say I get in...will I receive a refund from the other schools I applied to since I'll be cancelling those applications?

If not, should I wait until I hear back from UVa to apply elsewhere?

I highly doubt it. I imagine a large amount of the app fee is used pay data input clerks to process/input your application into whatever database/application system they use. Even if they have yet to render a decision, most if not all schools have already done this with with your app.

Seriously? If everyone was able to get refunds after withdrawing applications the number of applicants to each school would probably skyrocket. The application fee shows you are serious about attending the school, or in the case of a fee waiver shows that the school is (somewhat) interested in you.

I'm assuming you're ED'ing to UVa right after you get back your October LSAT, meaning if you get rejected from there you'll still have your app in before Thanksgiving. There is probably a minimal difference in chances between those two weeks. If you want every little ounce of help you can get then I would send it in so you are with the flood of October LSAT takers rather than after it, but if you care about the money then you might as well wait.

I would pay $100 for 1% increase in my chances of acceptance, but I know this doesn't apply to everyone.

Probably waitlist considering you would be under both medians, but I have no idea how much of a boost being in-state is. I would at least try considering in-state.

Probably not. UVA is incredibly median-conscious, and they typically require ED applicants to have at least one number at or above a median. Your GPA just barely (barely!) misses the cut, so you have to compensate for that shortfall with a 170+ LSAT. If your October LSAT doesn't measure-up, I can almost guarantee that you get thrown to the waitlist.

If you haven't graduated college, you should make sure you get to a 3.85 before your GPA is sealed forever. Otherwise it's 170.

Yeah this won't matter as much for ED since he won't be able to update grades until January? Meaning his ED will be late and not as helpful.

Oh I implied actually delaying his application until next year... probably be a better economy too if you give it another year before heading off to Law School.

(This is slightly ironic coming from somebody that's class of 2013 hahaha)

Well he'll get WL'd and when his LSDAC gpa gets updated, he'll get in.

Thanks for the advice. I'll retake in december and apply ED in early january if I don't get at least a 170 on the october LSAT

3.85/170 are UVa's medians, iirc.

If both of his scores are near the 75th (3.84 is a low closer to 3.92 than 3.54 and 170 is a lot closer to 171 than 170) shouldn't he easily get in?

I'm not going to get into the whole explaining statistics thing, but you are wrong. The way that many schools can drag their medians very close to their 75th percentile is by taking the right combination of splitters and reverse-splitters which results in a low 25th but a high median.

Schools care more about their medians than their 25/75 percentiles. The reason that Harvard is different is because Harvard doesn't really take splitters so they have a more "natural" median that isn't being gamed to a certain extent by using splitters.
