Do classes taken matter or is it just GPA?

Post by AreJay711 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:12 pm

Basically my question is this: Would hurt my chances SIGNIFICANTLY to drop a 400 level class I'm in this semester as that would leave me with one 400 level, two 300 level (one an honors seminar), and two lower level (accounting and a gen. ed. art class)? I have a 3.92, LSAC says I'm in the top 2% at my school, and a 172 LSAT. I'm not concerned for most schools but getting edged out at a "reach" like Harvard, Columbia, or Chicago. I'm an Economics major by the way. Thanks!

I doubt they will care whether or not you took a 400 level course.

Im really hoping you mean two 300 levels outside your major or your school counts 200 level courses as "upper-division".. how on earth could you possibly get an econ degree(or any degree for that matter) with so few upper division courses. My school requires something like 42 hrs of upper division credit to even graduate.

They probably won't even care what specific classes you took to be honest.

I meant this semester; I should have specified. So for schools that will want to see my fall grades. I have 27 upper level currently, 300 and 400 level courses at my school, and am taking 9 this semester not including the one I'm debating whether or not to drop. I'm getting that overall it doesn't matter though.

Eh, the only 300 level course in my major was the senior seminar. Everything else was 200 or 100.

As long as you take enough upper-level credits that you do get your degree by the time you're supposed to show up for law orientation, they really don't care which semesters you took them in. Just take classes you find interesting, avoid ones that'll stress you out, and get good grades.

Just curious - how did your school differentiate between 100-400 level classes? At my UG <100 was lower division, 100<x<200 was upper division, and 200<x<300 was all graduate courses.

They're probably not gonna look at what you took, unless they're trying to split hairs between you and another candidate.

Basically, it's JUST GPA.

As you can see, 100 200 300 400 level means something different at almost every school. They won't care as long as you have enough upper-level courses to graduate. And if you really have NINE classes this semester I think you're good. Drop it, keep your GPA up and stop tripping.
