What am I considered? URM?

Postby bocastudent » Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:51 am

This is gonna sound very stupid, but that's why I am asking you guys for help and not a representative from a school to which I wish to apply. :P

I have dual citizenship, Brazilian and Italian, but I was born and raised (most of my life) in Brazil. I've been here in the USA since 8th grade so I obviously speak english fluently (but still with a disadvantage compared to native speakers).

I don't know what I should put on my application. In fact, I don't even know what they'll ask-- race? nationality? religion? citizenship?

I guess what I'm trying to get at is: What should I put on my application that will help me the most? (URM? ...I don't even know what this means, I just know it's something about minorities.) I know they like the whole diversity thing, so should I put I'm Brazilian and Italian? But I also know they like the whole concept of being from a third world country, struggling immigrant family, having to adapt to EVERYTHING, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

1Put down what you are.
2You are not a URM, as in boost. (aa, mexican,PR)
3write a DS.

You won't get a URM boost. As the poster above me said, you should write a diversity statement.

They'll ask race, you can check all that applies.

Again, write a DS that states your diversity /different background.
