Does anyone understand the point of hidden fee waivers? I thought fee waivers were intended as an incentive for people to apply who otherwise might not...doesn't hiding them defeat the purpose?

All of the "hidden" fee waivers that I received were just fee waivers that were put into the system but for which no email/letter had yet arrived. NYU and Michigan both gave me a "hidden" fee waiver, but it was really just that the fee waiver took effect before the very nice letters they sent arrived.ech41989 wrote:Does anyone understand the point of hidden fee waivers? In my experience, a lot of the time having a hidden fee waiver indicates that the school will be e-mailing you about it but they haven't gotten around to it yet.ech41989 wrote:Does anyone understand the point of hidden fee waivers? So it's just like they do a CRS search, assign fee waivers there, then get busy around the office and decide to send out the e-mails next week. I'm not sure if any of mine actually stayed hidden. I was just contacted about them later- sometimes much later (2-3 weeks). So if you want to apply earlier, you have an advantage in checking now instead of later.

I don't care how the waivers come- hidden, undidden, email, letter, whatever. I just appreciate the fact that I will not have to spend a thousand dollars to apply to law schools.

Re: Application Fee Waivers - Fall 2011 Applicants
It seems like some people have already received waivers from Chicago, while others who requested them have not. Do waivers come in waves, or are those of us who haven't received one yet screwed? Should I wait longer, or just send my app?
Has anyone received a Penn waiver? Was it by email, snail mail, or hidden? I think Nullisecondus said he had. Same thing as Chicago: should I wait longer?
What about Columbia?

They don't necessarily give you a waiver because you're a good candidate.neonx wrote:

I got (back from the June exam) waivers for Columbia, Chicago, NYU, and others. But not Penn . And now not BU either.

I'm jealous of your CC waivers. Also, why the hell are we not getting BU waivers? Is this some kind of app fee yield protection? XD

My numbers are the same, and no waiver from NYU (at least from what I can tell...)! Bah. Best of luck to you!Entchen wrote:I got (back from the June exam) waivers for Columbia, Chicago, NYU, and others. But not Penn . And now not BU either.

You can have my Chicago one, I'm not using it. Trade you for a Penn. Or a Duke PT.Hannibal wrote:I'm jealous of your CC waivers. Also, why the hell are we not getting BU waivers? Is this some kind of app fee yield protection? XD
Actually, NYC, I may have made up the NYU one. I think I got one from them, but I'm not actually applying, so I don't remember.

Haha okay, that makes me feel better. Also glad to have one less competitor in the applicant pool. Just kidding.Entchen wrote:You can have my Chicago one, I'm not using it. Trade you for a Penn. Why aren't you interested in NYU or Chicago? You EDing to Columbia or something? Either way, as a candidate with a similar GPA but slightly lower LSAT, I'm glad to have you out of the NYU pool!Entchen wrote: You can have my Chicago one, I'm not using it. Trade you for a Penn. Or a Duke PT.

Anybody think it would be poor form to email G'Town and request a fee waiver?

I really dislike big cities. Only applying to Columbia at my family's insistence. Gunning for Mich.sgtgrumbles wrote:Why aren't you interested in NYU or Chicago? You EDing to Columbia or something?
