Huge Deal (i.e. I'm Screwed) or Not so Bad...

Postby UtterConfusion » Sat May 15, 2010 1:44 am

*Edit: I Appreciate all of the far-more-level-headed-than-I advice, and will certainly act on this come Monday. Also, because I posted here, then realized it might be better to post in a forum where people had already been through the process, this thread (which seems "/" finished) and my update on the outcome for those who are interested will be here:

http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=117696.

Apologies for any redundancy, and again, thanks.

Thanks for any (sincere) advice on this matter, as I'm kind of losing my mind as to what will become of it.

Briefly, I've been admitted to and have accepted at a Top 14 school, and am very excited to attend this Fall. However, I've only now (truly) just realized that my school wanted to see ALL GRADUATE school transcripts, not just those granting degrees. I guess I thought grad schools did not matter much in the process unless they were degree granting, and I only supplied transcripts for and listed on applications the grad schools that I... 1. Received my MA from. 2. Am receiving my PhD from.

However, between my MA and Phd I also attended and taught at another school as a GRADUATE student for a year, taking only 3-4 courses, getting A's in all, and receiving nothing but good teaching reviews. There were no disciplinary or grade problems whatsoever, and I simply left this place for a different PhD program, and have thought little of it since.

Given these reasons, it may seem silly/foolish/absurd not to have sent this transcript in to LSAC or to include it on my T14's application, but I truly did not think it was necessary given the circumstances.

So...What should I do?

I'm definitely set on disclosing this after talking to others, and reading these boards--especially as I was not trying to be disingenuous in the first place. But, should I try to set the record straight now with the school and LSAC? Or would it be better to wait until I'm actually attending classes at my T14 and go to the Dean of Students in person with something similar to what I've written here?

Am I screwed and at serious risk for having admission rescinded? Or am I over-reacting?

Thoughts and advice are truly, greatly appreciated...

Why would you wait until you're already in classes? They'll see through that faster than you can spot a douchebag gunner.

Call the head of admissions (don't settle for the student making $7.50 an hour sitting behind the desk answering calls, get through to the head of admissions), explain your error, and ask how best to rectify the situation. Tell that person everything you said here...you weren't trying to hide anything, it was an honest mistake, and you've just now discovered you were in error and need to correct it.

I guarantee the school has had someone make a similar mistake in the past, if not the exact same one. Taking the initiative and calling the school to fix it will demonstrate that it was simply a mistake, not intentional.

Everyone makes mistakes. It's how you handle it that is important; owning up to it and fixing it promptly is far, far better than trying to cover it up. Sitting on it until classes start is probably more likely to get you in trouble.

I agree completely. That you did well in the grad school whose transcript you omitted shows that you weren't trying to hide anything. They'll understand; just be straightforward and, like kalvano said, explain everything like you did here and you should be fine.

You should be fine. However, do NOT wait. Disclose immediately. As in today. As in within the hour.

Call the admissions office and explain. They'll let you know the right way to handle things. I wouldn't involve LSAC unless the school asks you to, they are such a pain to deal with. +1 to all posters who said it's no big deal. You made an honest mistake, it's fine.

Also, this can absolutely wait until Monday. Enjoy your weekend.

Please tell me this is because you have been out drinking yourself into a post-finals stupor and not because you've been in a library for 4 days and don't know if it is morning or night.

Just take care of it Monday, not sure why this would be a big deal. It seems like an honest mistake that does not affect your LSAC GPA at all.

Kind of both. First it was the post-finals stupor, then it turned into casenote sequestering. Two more days, then I get to drive off to me summer job.
