Could a semester of straight A's make up for..

Postby Dr. Strangelove » Tue May 11, 2010 5:29 pm

...a ~2.9 GPA?
I'm taking a bunch of easy classes next semester and will be working for a 4.0. (Difficult major- have a very laid-back schedule next semester.)
Will the 4.0 one semester give me a push at law schools?

It will help exactly as much as it increases your overall GPA.

I have three years of straight A's (one of them abroad and not counted in my GPA). It has made exactly zero difference in my cycle.

Assuming you're a junior now, 6 semesters of 2.9 plus 1 semester of straight A's gives you roughly:
(6*2.9 + 4)/7 = 3.06. Of course, the exact value depends on how many credit hours you took each semester.

If it's part of an upward trend, maybe. In most cases, though, it really comes down to your cumulative LSAC GPA. I would imagine one semester with easy classes to pad your GPA isn't going to impress too many adcoms.

If it pushes you over 3 then it really helps.

Its things like this that made me petition for a retroactive semester withdrawal. My GPA would have been at least .17 less if I hadn't decided to try. This is an option you should consider. As long as you have a legitimate reason, of course.

Good luck!!!

If the school you're applying to has a 3.0 cutoff (some do), then TITCR. Since many do, and you'll need to take a shotgun approach with that GPA, odds are you'll apply to one.
