I have almost a Kate Gosselin hairstyle and I like it. I've had it since a little before she was popular and I think it is great. I manage to pull mine off because I have dark hair though, so that might be it.

Really? I mean, obnoxiously skinny is one thing, but what about 2.5" at the bottom? What about the occasional knit tie? Obviously I wouldn't push the envelope during an interview or an important meeting with a client, but do firms really dislike associates showing any personality at all?

There are degrees of everything. For example, another poster mentioned wanting a skinny tie to offset his small stature. That's appropriate, so long as the tie is matching his size. To better illustrate what I mean:

However, there is a modern trend where young men like to wear very thin ties, such as this dumb ass:

Those types of "skinny ties" are very popular with suits and outfits worn to clubs and to parties. While they may be appropriate there (although I find them deplorable anywhere), they are certainly not appropriate in a business setting.

Men's (hell, AND women's) business fashion is conservative, whether one likes it or not. It does not follow trends (or does very slowly; how long have suspenders been trying to make a comeback?) and it is not designed to help you show your individuality. At its core it is designed to make you look intelligent, clean, and to not make your colleagues think you're a huge douche bag.

Overly thick ties are also not appropriate until you are a senior partner and/or have taken over as CEO somewhere huge (and gained 80 pounds or so). The one in that first picture in mb88's post is too thick -- it shouldn't take over your entire chest.

I think law firms look for the more conservative look, so now i'm thinking of going for a more "colbert" hairstyle, combed to the side kind of thing. I'm probably over analyzing the hair thing, but any suggestions?

But seriously: No douchebag hair. Ties should fit your frame and compliment your jacket lapels (IMHO the tie on mb88's 1st example is too wide, but no offensively so, his 2nd example makes me feel sad for humanity).

And don't dress like Prince Edward in Glen plaid and double-breasted suits during work unless you're royalty or a named partner.
