Stay away from HP. It only took a few months before the touchpad was acting up. Still works, but can be a pain to deal with.

I have a 5 yr old hp pavilion dv 6000. The touchpad does overheat from time to time so I a use a usb mouse. The computer runs fast. No problems 'cept the time I dropped it and had to replace the screen, but I worry that its waiting till law school finals to fail.

I don't think hps are bad, I got a great deal at Costco for mine.

No, I maxed out on the 8 GB by having everyones install it on their computer at work. If you have ever lost info or had a Hard drive damaged, you know this service is worth it. Also if you delete files and regret ur decision you can pay and have them de-deleted.

This is great for law school and I should probably stop talking about it before Ken things I am being payed to sponsor the service.

No, I maxed out on the 8 GB by having everyones install it on their computer at work. If you have ever lost info or had a Hard drive damaged, you know this service is worth it. Also if you delete files and regret ur decision you can pay and have them de-deleted.

I'm pretty sold on a Lenovo. What was the consensus on the Edge series? I'm debating between the 13" (lightweight) and the 14" (built-in DVD and bigger screen).

I'm pretty handy with computers, but I don't want to have to mess with it. I just want it to be reliable.

As far as I can tell, as far as Lenovo goes, the T series seems to offer the only real stand alone quality difference. The rest of the series seem to be much in line with Asus, dell, sony, etc..

Correct. If you're looking at the edges, just spend a few extra bucks and get a t410. The T series is really the only high quality laptop Lenovo makes.

The plastic/structural components of the thinkpad are vastly superior to the edge. Think of the edge as the plastic macbook and the T410 as a macbook pro.

If it has a padded slot for it, sure. If you're still just worried about overall reliability, just protect yourself with the 3 year added protection. Done deal.

Yeah, I've got a padded sleeve to slip it in to.

All the reviews I read remarked on how, while not up to the standards of other Thinkpads, it's still better built than all the other laptops of the same size.

I'm taking it to class, library, and home. That's it. And $200 is $200.

Worth the extra $200 or so to get a new one? I also like the 14" Sony Vaio which is like $749 new with basically the same specs. Have you had bad experiences with refurbished machines?

Don't worry about refurbs. 9/10 times they come with the same manufacturer's warranty. If people just return them because they don't want them, they are sold as refurb. Most of the time they are good as new. I'd go for it.

I'd rather have a crippled monkey working a Commodore 64 than a Sony.

And yes, bad luck with refurbished machines. For $200, I'd rather have new.

Yeah I have a refurbished one now which has been fine for the last three years it's just too big to take to class all the time. I thinking I will go for it ... open to other suggestions though. I just don't want to spend more than $600-$700.

Just ordered the Edge, mainly due to the cost. Got it standard across the board, I'll toss on win7 professional and the 2007 office suite on when I get it. The only thing I'm not happy about is its not shipping until 7/22.. that wait time is a bit crazy, imo.
