I am considering doing this. I'm waiting till I have the N71 in my hands before pulling the trigger on the second one. More or less, I've decided the N71 is the best laptop choice for my preferences, but I feel like there will be times when I'd rather just grab something much smaller to tote around. I'll want the extra resolution, number pads, and extra size to the monitor when I'm writing papers or preparing outlines, and I'd like to be able to do that in places other than my bedroom. I was forced to lease a Thinkpad from my undergrad for junior and senior year, and was really impressed. If the one I'm sent is a dud, Overstock.com allows full refund returns in the first 30 days.
If I get the Asus and decide I don't mind carrying it everywhere, I'll wait on buying a refurbished spare till there's trouble.
