Unless you have some really great opportunity that you want to do this year then just go to Harvard. Why would you waste a year to most likely not get into Yale again next year. I know it hurts right now that you get rejected at Yale, but give it a few days and you will be over it and excited about going to Harvard.

Have some people who you trust lead over your personal statement to see if there are things in there that may have made you look bad. While you can't improve your GPA in the interim year, you can certainly do something (are you still in UG?) that makes you much more appealing.

At most, it's one year and you'd be still only 23 (if you're in UG). There's no harm in letting a dream go just because it failed the first time.

Oh also, don't listen to the other naysayers in this thread; you're the only person who can judge your goals accurately. If you feel that you want to take one more shot, you should do so. Your backup in Harvard will be available again next year anyway.
Thanks for your reply. Right now, I'm leaning towards reapplying next year. Yup, still in undergrad and starting law school at 22 instead of 21 is not a huge deal for me. During that year, I'll try to make my resume more interesting and I kind of like the idea of taking some time to travel and do things I've been planning to do for a long time and never had time. So even if they reject me again, it probably wouldn't be just a waste of time.

And to all of those who called my a douche, whether it's because I typed inter alia or because I got into HLS, I'll wish you best of luck with your law school applications.
It sounds like your qualified enough to be a fullbright scholar, why don't you try your shot at that. If you get that, go away from a year then you can talk about how you taught kids to read in Sudan or something. Schools love those name scholars so much, if you are really the shit go get a Rhodes. I heard that there is a rule that if you get that Yale has to take you, then you get to be part of skull and bones too ooooooooooooooohhhh aaaaaaaaaaahh lmao

Legally change your last name to Schwab or Sachs or something and apply again next year. Hint at a family history of being involved with finance in your PS.

I think the problem is that, for your niche (consulting/business), you're a small fish compared to others. If you're going for the "I'm a smart, successful future business leader," people with the same track record, but more experience/accolades, are going to win every time. On top of that, Yale is not typically the place for people in your niche, which makes the competition for the few they take for "diversity" all the more fierce.

You're not allowed to use inter alia and have a typo in the same sentence.

I think you are right. Plus, I stated in my personal statement that I never planed on practicing law and that after law school I wanted to continue working on my start-up. I am sure it didn't help. My pre-law adviser thought it was cute that I was honest and that "YLS admission officers presume that a Yale law degree is the reasonable academic goal of any person on his right mind." I now think it was pure stupidity.

All playing aside, I think that was a stupid move on your part and it probably tilted the balance against you.

Good luck next year!

If you are using law school as a networking tool or want to use it to benefit your business endeavors, I think Harvard is a better school anyway. More people, more professors, more general prestige = more networking.

The bottom line problem with this is that you are more concerned with going to Yale than going to Law School. You didn't get in to Yale dude, deal with it. You got in to Harvard; if you are going to Law School to be a lawyer, you are in good shape. If you are going to Law School so you can go to Yale, than your thought process is completely screwed up and you should really reconsider what you want to do with your life.

I don't mean to be rude, but I want to seriously ask if you are a flame. For someone so intelligent you have made some really obvious grammatical and spelling errors in your posts. I also mean no offense if you are an international student. For the record, it is "planned on practicing" not "planed on practicing," the correct idiom is "person IN his right mind," and you forgot the article in "wish you THE best of luck"

dwoof, I am assuming you have never typed an i instead of an o then? Look at your keyboard, they are pretty close together. And generally people don't check for grammar and spelling on TLS bullshit posts, unless they are losers...

Harvard is among the few finest academic institutions in the world, and you are complaining because you've earned such a rare opportunity that only scarce people can get? I'll never understand people like you nor why you consider these to be problems. Plus, your GPA was below their median. It was a mistake to think this was going to be a sure shot.

Uhh... Harvard is probably the better choice for you anyway. Larger alumni network + much better business school + larger %age of people with similar interests means it's definitely the way to go. You got into what's probably the best possible school for your goals, now go there.

I learned two things from this article:

1. Everyone who gets rejected from Harvard settles for Columbia.
2. Tom Brokaw was a handsome devil when he was young.

Why do you even want to go to Yale so much?

If you have substantive reasons then it might make sense to reapply in a year or two once you've gained a bit more experience in your field.

As other people have mentioned, your "soft factors" are great but they're not "automatically get you into YLS" great. With a very narrow range of exceptional exceptions (Rhodes, bestselling novel, olympics, etc...) spending a year doing something for the sake of your C.V. won't help that.

In any case, it sounds like you don't really know what you want out of law school (aside from "winning" by going to the #1 school) and it might be very smart to take a year or two off and get some perspective on life. You might still not get into Yale (in fact, you probably wouldn't), but you'll be a much better and well-rounded person for it.

Ha you are cute. Thanks for making me smile.

Don't get me wrong guys, I am completely aware of the fact that HLS is a great law school. Additionally, HLS also has the benefit of being associated with HBS, which is better than Yale School of Management. But you know, I am in such a shitty mood that I can't think reasonably right now. Also, what I didn't say in previous posts is that my brother has graduated from YLS (and had much lower numbers, btw) and that fact joined the list of impulsive factors that made me so hung up on YLS. I may feel better about this whole ding drama tomorrow...
