It's gone in and out of TT status on the USNWR ranking. The fact that it's #1 in trial advocacy, #5 in legal writing, and possesses an abundance of high caliber legal scholars, would suggest that a higher ranking might be deserved. I understand that it is also based on the GPA and LSAT's for those who attend, but based on the afformentioned, it is in my opinion underrated.

UC Hastings is, by far, one of the most underrated schools, and probably has the most potential of breaking into the top 20 in the next 20 years.

1) UC hastings is directly in one of the top 10 largest legal markets in the country.
2) It is surrounded by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, the California Supreme Court, and the California Court of Appeal for the First District, San Francisco Superior Court.
3) It's tuition is less than any school in the UC system, and this disparity is only going to increase over time California being in the economic mess that it is in.

How will they break into the top 20:

1) Clean the god damn area up. Alot of the top potential students who would consider it are really turned off by the crime statistics and the roaming homeless people.

2) Aggressively poach the top legal minds from the UC schools.

3) Aggressively push to increase both the GPA and LSAT medians

Hastings has gradually declined in the rankings over the last 20 years, I'm not sure why you think that trend is going to suddenly reverse. It's tuition may be slightly less than the other UC schools, but I'm pretty sure it is still more than every other state school except Michigan. It may be in a major legal market, but it is in a major legal market where there are also two T6 schools, and in a state with four T20s, not to mention it has to directly compete with Davis. I just don't see how Hastings is possibly positioned to make any significant upward move in the rankings.

First off, Hastings has not been gradually declining. It went from being ranked 20 in 1994 to all of a sudden being ranked 45 in 1995. It's been having trouble making its way down USWNR afterwards(In economic terms, it's been in a negative feedback loop ever since) But, I see potential it's ranked 39 right now.

But, the area around the school NEEDS to get cleaned up before I think they could make an aggresive push for better quality students.

Every law school would like to do 2 and 3, but it takes money and the reputation to attract students, none of which Hastings has over its peers.
