Email and say you are very very sorry for missing you appointment but were "unavoidable detained." Be very apologetic, and ask to please reschedule. I think ignoring it hurts you more and a elaborate excuse looks bad. I wouldn't offer up that you forgot unless they press you for an explanation.

the problem is I remembered the day after the appt. I thinkthe appt was for yesterday
