Florida Costal is Win in Florida (?)

About once a week I get a generous email from Florida Costal regarding admissions and scholarship offer I never applied for. I appreciated their persistence so I decided to Google them. It turns out, for a school that graduated its first class in 1999, it's doing pretty well with an impressive bar passage rate.

"Of the 75.73% of FCSL's students reporting first-time bar exams, 80.34% passed, 2.78 points above the Florida state average of 77.56%"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Co ... ool_of_Law

University of Miami, however, flaunts only 61% bar passage rate, although it improved over the last 2 years.

Discuss.

I was under the impression that Miami's bar passage rate is much better than 61%.

They probably fail 30-50% of 1L's before they even graduate, to keep their bar passage rate up.

this is all taken directly from their tls profile:

"Students warned, however, that those scholarships could and would be revoked if a recipient fell beneath a certain class rank. These students claimed most recipients lost their scholarships after the first year."

"On average, 2008 graduates incurred a hefty $99,116 in law school-related debt. "

"Current students say the grading curve is harsh and results in 11.3 percent of students dropping out after the first year."

"...the median salary in the private sector was $50,000."

"Florida Coastal’s Tier 4 status tends to hurt graduates who are hunting for jobs."

"As a Tier 4 law school in a market saturated with lawyers, graduates of Florida Coastal will likely find their transition into the workforce to be difficult. With over $99,000 in debt and the prospect of making less than $50,000 coming out of law school, Florida Coastal graduates face a rough road ahead of them."

now this is not all gospel, obviously, but a tier 4 school located about an hour and a half from the top school in the state is not a good combination.

Got the same email today from the admissions dean. I googled the school, called him up, and we talked for a few minutes;

Me: "Does FCSL offer any type of Loan Repayment Assistance Program?"
Dean: "Ummmm.... not that I know of...."

Mind you that was the Dean of Admissions for the Law School. He wasn't sure if they had a LRAP. Regardless, I still applied just so I could use the scholarship offer to negotiate $$$ from other schools.

I think the cost of gas to get to Jacksonville is more than I would ever pay to attend Florida Coastal.
