I was wondering if anyone feels like this would be an issue that needs to be addressed with an addendum:

I'm a citizen of a European country, and I was in a U.S accredited graduate school in the Middle East. I had completed my coursework, and was working on my thesis. I was pretty sure I wouldn't get drafted by my military while in school, and I had asked for a deferral already. I was wrong, and I had to leave my studies and report to duty. After completing my military service, I came to the states for the summer and intended to return to the M.E country in which I was stuying.

However, my wife (A U.S citizen) and I decided to get married, incurred costs along the way because I adjusted status to a U.S permanent resident, and as a result I couldn't afford to go back on my own dime to finish the degree in the M.E. So, If I stay I get financial aid and get to go to law school (which was the plan anyway), but I don't finish the M.A. To finish the M.A would mean I incur travel costs, housing costs, and no financial assistance with tuition. I know, a lot of variables to consider...

I've been juggling with the idea of writing an addendum explaining all this. Does anyone think that it's unnecessary, or worse, that it could hurt my chances?

Seems to be a lot of good advice on this website, so I figure there must be an authority or two out there.

Wow, i'm gonna let someone more experienced answer your question, but I just want to say if you choose to write about this you can have an interesting personal statement

Appreciate the tip. It's always hard to think about what topic of your own life is interesting enough for a personal statement.

I would submit an addendum. You were drafted, then you couldn't afford to go back, not too much detail. I think simplicity is key in all professional writing if for no other reason than your audience won't read it if it's too long.
