Top Law Schools

Hey, guys...so when I was applying I was supposed to be inducted into an academic honor society, like my third. I put it on my resume, and totally forgot to send in the fee on-time, so it turns out I won't be in it because I was lazy.

Is it a huge deal if I don't email schools to be like "Yo, turns out I'm not in XXX honor society", I have like 20 lines of academic honors and awards...so it isn't like this is a huge portion or anything.

No, definitely wouldn't worry about it.

If it is phi beta kappa it matters, if not no one will likely care.

I say that because phi beta kappa is the best honor society and probably the only one that provides a bump to most applicants.

In my view, it does not matter how prestigious the honor society is, or how little space listing it took up. Many (if not most) law schools require candidates to inform them if there are any changes concerning their applications. (NYU's certification statement, for example, says, "I shall promptly inform the Office of Admissions if there is any change in any of the facts given.") Regardless of your other academic accomplishments, if you claimed to be a member of a certain honor society but are not, then you have an obligation to let law schools know that.

Edit: and it won't hurt you; every one knows those pay-your-fee-and-get-in honor societies are worthless and add nothing to your resume, anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it, but how hard/much time would it take to email the admissions office and say "FYI, there is an error on my resume saying that I am part of XXX. This is incorrect and this is the reason why."

Being a lawyer requires the utmost integrity and intellect. Your incorrect resumerical statement of fact exemplifies a adherent lack of grace, intelligence, and class. I recommend that you pack your bags, take a year off, and reconsider if you are smart enough to handle law school.

I agree with the general consensus above. You must correct this error, but I don't see it hurting you. Send in a quick correction to all your schools - something along the lines of, "I write to correct an error on my resume. My resume incorrectly states that I am a member of X honor society. I am not. I received an invitation to join X honor society, but chose not to pay the annual membership fee."
