What is the consensus on whether its easier to get into a top MBA program if you are a 1L at the law school to do a JD/MBA as opposed to applying for JD/MBA before enrolling?

The conventional wisdom seems to be that it's easier to join the MBA program as a 1L, especially in cases where the business school is more competitive than the law school (e.g., Penn). But I speak not from experience.

I would treat all anecdotal evidence with skepticism. Even if you hear of a higher chance of admission as a 1L, that may only be because those who applied in the first place felt they had a stronger chance of getting in than a normal candidate applying outside of law school. If you can't extricate that effect, the entire point is meaningless.

I would say you might have a slightly better shot if you apply as a 1L (they know you will come, you can spin a better story), but the flipside is you only have one shot. If you're a 1L, you can only apply to one school. If you apply to both programs at the same time, you can apply to multiple schools, which I think would increase your chances a lot more.
