I just received an email from a top law school saying that I have passed an initial review and I am being considered for further consideration by the Admissions Committee. Should I reply to the email or send a formal letter expressing my great interest in the school? Does anyone have experience with this?

Not sure that it would do anything good. Never heard of any school doing it.
