I did not write an essay, got a merit scholarship, and I don't think it is really necessary. Your grades/LSAT/resume should be able to explain your potential. I had a conversation with the dean of admissions last May and she seemed to indicate that based on my LSAT I would be in the running for some money. Good luck!
