A 3.85 or a 170 is probably not a guarantee any more.

I see no reason why not. It might not remain a 170 or a 3.85, but it will be something fairly predictable given UVA numbers-driven approach.

O RLY. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that a 170 was the 97.5 percentile and a 171 was 98.7 or something like that which would make the number of 170s roughly equal to the number of >170s.

edit: nevermind

From this:

It looks like the number of 170-172s are GREATER than the number of 173-180s.

170 - 97.5
171 - 98.1
172 - 98.6

171 is a 98.1

170 is a 97.5

So 1.9% have above a 170, and .6 have a 170. Not quite the same but I understand your point.

It really depends on how close to 171 they usually are.

I may have done my math wrong... 97.5% is right for 170, for 171, the percentile is 98.1. What I did was multiply the two by a reasonable total unique LSAT taker total of 160,000, subtract the value of the 2.5% percentile from the 1.9% and I got my total 170 scorers.

I wonder if they'll accept EDing from people on the wait list.

Still, my main point was that, as you go up the score chart, higher scorers get rarer and rarer. This makes it increasingly harder for a law school in the bottom of the T10 to bump up the LSAT median, especially considering the HIGHER YIELDS at HYSCC.

Definitely a valid point. Unless they are feeling generous with money, hehe.

There are a lot better anti-YP methods than giving up your chance of choice or money...

You mean like keeping people on the waitlist until 5 days before matriculation and then admitting them if you're low on numbers?

If Dean Trujillo would extend the ED deadline till after the release of 2011 USNWR rankings, that would b truly awesome. With UVA's impressive jump in GPA least year (high 3.7s to 3.85), that should put them over Michigan (all else being equal, of course (not a terrible assumption)). When the inevitable "Michigan in decline" freakout occurs they could pick up a couple more candidates.

UVA and Mich will tied at 9

NU and Duke will tie for 11.

And UT and GT will tie for 14.

I still don't get why UVA decided to alter their ED process like this, especially in the middle of the cycle. I mean, it's not really an "early" decision any longer, so why would they even continue to call it that? It seems like it has something to do with their yield, but whatever the reason, it sounds pretty shady to me.

Or it could be they realize a drop in ranking is coming and want to lock people in before they find out about it.

Honestly, why wouldn't schools do this. ED is just a dream for them, they can pick whoever they want and have a guarantee that that person attends and they don't have to give $$, never mind bargain later. It's nothing but win for them. Could simply be they saw people sending in the ED ap the longer they had to wait, and someone there said, it's working well, why not run up matric %/$$ by just doing it all year? Why wouldn't all schools do it all year, there's no downside for them?

I think it's more than that. I think they're trying to lock in higher quality admits. Early January is a time during which people start to freak out. You've got 172/3.7 types who ED'd to Colubmia/NYU and who then got rejected/deferred. We've even seen a few people with those numbers who were deferred by Cornell. Furthermore, you've got the inevitable batch of high-quality applicants who were sure that they were getting into Berkeley in December but who are now puzzled that they have yet to hear anything. And, finally, you've got several schools (Chicago, NU, Columbia) who tend to take their sweet time getting back to RD applicants.

Basically, you've got hundreds of nervous applicants, some of whom with Columbia/Chicago/Berkeley numbers, who are worried that they will get shut out of the T14. Virginia is throwing them a late life line, and I bet at least a couple dozen will grab it. It's a brilliant move.

When have numbers ever stopped Cooley?!? If they can invent a badass ranking system taking into consideration factors such as restroom square footage and total weightage of library staff, they can sure as hell invent a workaround to this measly problem.
