What should my topic be?

Post by achris1210 » Fri Oct 20, 2017 6:35 pm

For my PS, I’m not sure what to write about. I’ve narrowed it down to the following points of interest. Which do you think will be the most compelling?

- I’ve been a child welfare social worker for the past seven years, and I have tons of stories I could tell. I also volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children working directly for the judges.

- I came out as a lesbian when I was 34 and married to a man with two kids.

- last year, my wife and I hiked the 500-mile Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route through northern Spain.

Maybe I could find a way to weave all three into my statement? Thoughts?

This seems very simple to me.
1st topic should be your PS
2nd topic should be your DS
3rd topic should just be listed in your resume as travel/hobbies/activities

Conversely, you could also do a perfectly lovely PS about hiking the Camino, into which you could probably weave number 2 (though number 2 could also easily be a separate diversity statement), and number 1 will be clear from your resume.

So, you know, it depends.

(one of the issues with #1 is the risk that 1) it will be more about the kids than you and/or 2) it turns into a story about how others' struggles are instrumental in your enlightenment, which can come across badly. To be clear, it absolutely doesn't have to do either of those things and could also make an excellent PS topic, but just FWIW.)
