Why all the sad PSs?

Postby jwelsh » Mon Feb 09, 2015 1:52 am

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has noticed that the majority of Personal Statements seem to be pretty sad/negative in their content (i.e. my parents were abusive, I had some sort of illness, I grew up poor, etc., etc.). Is there is a reason for this? I suppose it paints the picture that the author has overcome adversity (which is great), but if I were an adcom, I'd get worn down (and perhaps start rolling my eyes) by the umpteenth essay on the "rough life" of a law school applicant.

Why is your post anonymous?

And yeah people seem to prefer writing about "defining moments," or important parts of their life. They often associate sad events with this because they stand out in our memories. I didn't write anything sad, and a lot of people don't. Maybe it's overdone, but at the end of the day the PS means pretty little unless you have some super compelling story.
