Question with PS

Why is it so damned difficult to write a personal statement? I have been working on it for over a month, and have not been able to even get what I would call a successful first draft complete (In other words nothing I'd post here). I'm having trouble talking about me, and I'm just stuck talking about the facts.
Here is what I am writing about:
I was the NRA's posterboy in a class action lawsuit that went bad. No I didn't get arrested or anything like that, we just lost and I faced a ton of bad press. The case has such a long story that I fear I cannot tell it in two pages, giving it the dignity it deserves. However, I don't want to miss out on telling the story that helped me decide to go to law school... HELP!!!

Have you tried reading other people's personal statements? It might help to read a bunch of them and get a feel for what kind of voice you want to use.

If you are bogged down trying to articulate your reasons for wanting to go to law school, try starting over with a different approach. Just write an interesting story in which you are a character. Avoid reciting facts. Use the narrative to show why you want to be a lawyer and why you would be a good student and classmate.

It took me a really long time to write mine, too.

I will also add that posting it here for critique can really help grease the wheels. It obviously is going to be a rough draft, and people here know that. But the simple act of having a lot of eyes read it, and provide comments, can really open up the process to you and get you moving along. I would suggest posting something - don't worry that it's not complete. That's the whole reason you post! :)

When I look at my PS now vs where it was when I first posted, it is amazing. You will use bits and pieces from your first draft, but once you get some critiques, the process becomes much easier.

Yeah it's brutal. I have some vague idea of the topic I want to write about, but no idea how to make that into a story... frustrating couple of weeks.
