Discrimination (Diversity Statement)

Post by lsatownsme » Fri Oct 12, 2012 10:16 pm

Do you think it would be inappropriate to talk about the racism that I faced as an Asian American and how it translated into an interest in the legal career? I won't explicitly label my experiences as "racism" within the statement, but I do have specific examples that would lead one to believe that it was some for of racial discrimination.

Talking about difficulties you faced because of racism is definitely worthy of a statement. I'm assuming these instances were significant enough to shape your identity. And why not call it racism? If you were discriminated against because of your race, then that's racism. Certainly, you don't need to use that word. But why think it's a dirty word, when it's the right word?

Edit: Sorry, I misread that this is a diversity statement. Then this topic is even more appropriate!
