1 seems like its more about your brother's hardships rather than your own. Also, if you wrote a PS on this then it would seem like your career motivations are driven by your brother's circumstances rather than your own.

2 is an awesome topic for a personal essay and can fit well with your interests in law depending on how you write it

3 seems like a great professional essay which ties in your experiences with your interests in a legal career. This would show how you want to use your experiences to supplement your legal education

Avoid 4 at all costs! Extended metaphors are super cliche and very very difficult to pull off unless you do them properly. Climbing a mountain is also a very overdone anecdote for adversity. Writing about how it would be like being a lawyer would be very forced.

Depends also on whether you are still in undergrad or few years out. Most schools don't even require you to mention law school in your essays. If your still in college, a personal essay about your interest would be great to show adcoms your personality. But if you're a couple years out of college, a professional essay about career goals and relevant experiences like number 3 would be more effective.

In all cases, don't worry about focusing on relating your experiences to law. I had this same problem when I was drafting my PS. Everything doesn't have to be an analogy of being lawyer. PS are for the applicant to demonstrate an aspect of your application beyond numbers and experiences. The worst thing you can do is force a law school analogy or about how you think being a lawyer is like without even entering the field yet (number 4).

Agree, 2 and 3 are really good topics. 1 is about someone else and 4 is cliché.

Thanks for the input. I am still in undergrad though I am starting my fifth year (the philosophy business is a dual degree, not a double major). I'm thinking writing
both #2 and #3 and see which looks good. Maybe tailor one to reach schools and another to targets.

first draft of #2 will be done shortly. Is anyone interested in giving it a read/editing/criticism? I'll gladly return the favor :)
