The NYU application has a blank space to identify yourself as a member of an underrepresented group and then asks you to provide a "brief statement" saying how this identity is relevant to your application.

Is this the same as a diversity statement?

don't remember there being a blank space... are you sure you're not looking at a space for other? or for Tribal affiliation?

Yes, they're asking for a diversity statement. The only unique thing is that they want you to give a summary of the ways you add diversity on the app itself.

I think I wrote in something like "[ethnic minority status], first-generation American, first-generation college graduate, from impoverished socioeconomic background". I then added a brief DS that briefly explained the bits I hadn't already covered in my PS.

Notice how it asks about anything that makes you part of an under-representativ group or would represent a disadvantaged background in a couple different ways; that's actually a broad brush they're giving you. So, if you have the paint (an actual diverse/disadvantaged background of some sort), name your colors and then paint them a picture.
