That's who people are gonna think of when they hear the name. Oh yeah, timeline would not work out.
Still, your great great grandfather is super duper INfamous, and who is your grandfather?

he is celebrated in italy for being the father of criminology... granted his methods were unconventional, but so were MOST scientists during this era

my grandfather is probably one of the most famous neurologists living today

"unconventional" is not sufficient for labeling someone an epic disaster for justice. What your great great grandfather did, however, was an epic disaster for justice.

Have you read any of his work? Are you familiar with his impact?

I'm sure this is true, but there are many "one of the most famous Xs living today" that aren't famous to laypeople, unless X refers to a sport or to national politics or entertainment etc. Academia is not one of those things, & as it stands, most adcomms prolly won't know your grandpa, while some of them will know your great grandpa. I don't know why the fuck the Italians celebrate him, but I don't know why the fuck the US celebrates Columbus.

yes I am... he was a sexist and a racist... but he was the first of his kind who thought there might be a correlation between one's head and one's actions... he focused on actual size and shape... but you have to start somewhere

It's one thing to start there theoretically, it's another entirely to put the theory into practice without objective statistical evidence.

He could have made tens of thousands of wax moldings. That doesn't make his evidence objective and statistical to the degree required to warrant the sort of causal claims he made & the way these claims were used.

I strongly suggest you read "The Mismeasure of Man" by Stephen Jay Gould.

im not saying he was CORRECT in a lot of his stances...I am saying he started a field that no one thought to look down... also a lot of what he discovered is still used today

look online at the museum, it talks about how his image was tarnished by some of his outlandish claims. TO says stupid things, doesn't mean he isnt a great receiver

This is a different subject. We were disagreeing about the scientific rigor of his research.
curly3426 wrote:I am saying he started a field that no one thought to look down... also a lot of what he discovered is still used today
Neither of these are decent reasons to support your great great grandfather, if we agree that he had a massive, horrific impact on countless lives. I could come up with hyperbolic examples, but you gotta go big or go home, & I'll get "OMG godwin"d if I go there.

I don't care about "some of his outlandish claims". I care about the main thrust that was actually practiced in courts & the impact this had.

Sorry for being a dick.

I think you should research a bit more about the italian courts at the time...

also you are ignoring the present day positive impact his research did
