Re: Diversity statement
so its better to give the impression that I won't add absolutely anything new to the class? I said I don't have "so called diversity", the typical definition. I obviously have characteristics that make me different than other people.bk187 wrote:So don't write a diversity statement?sayruss11 wrote:My problem is that I am a 24 year old white female with little so called "diversity"so I decided to write about being the youngest in my family of all boys and how that has I dunno, made me diverse.

Everybody has characteristics that make them different than other people. That doesn't mean everybody should be out there writing DS's.sayruss11 wrote:so its better to give the impression that I won't add absolutely anything new to the class? Re: Diversity statement
This reads more like a PS than a DS. Except it wouldn't be a very good PS, either.

Re: Diversity statement
well the prompt for the optional essay was something along the lines of discussing anything about your background that you believe would add diversity to the class population.
I admit it was a weak topic, but I thought if I really wanted admission to this school I should do all the optional essays. I read somewhere that just because you're not a URM doesn't mean you shouldn't bother to write a diversity statement. My PS isn't about any kind of diversity.

Re: Diversity statement
Gotcha. I feel like I, too, had to write about this topic and I, too, had little world/culture experience, so I understand the difficulty. If you feel like you must submit a diversity statement and you don't feel like you have significant exposure to other cultures, religions, whatever have you, then I do believe you should write about something you are familiar with, i.e. I see why you chose to write about your family. Your statement doesn't have to be profound. I really don't think what you wrote was bad; but maybe try and dig a little deeper and see if you can come up with a different experience you may have had with someone from a different background and the challenges it presented and how you overcame xyz, and how that equates to the classroom and eventually the practice of law. (I have to admit I skimmed your post initially, so I don't remember if you did all of these things-you may have)sayruss11 wrote:well the prompt for the optional essay was something along the lines of discussing anything about your background that you believe would add diversity to the class population.

Re: Diversity statement
Thanks for your input!! I love when people are constructive and aren't just like "don't do this". I actually did live and teach English in Spain for a year, so I could definitely come up with some experience I had with someone of a different culture. I really want to submit something for the optional so I'm gonna start over.

I'm sure "I've talked to some brown people" would make for a great DS.sayruss11 wrote:if only we could all be in on your infinite wisdom. sigh.

hmmm I never realized that that was all I needed to write about to have an excellent DS, or that people of Spanish decent were "brown people". Thank you again for your wisdom!
