Quick question, I know that one is not supposed to use slang in formal writing, but do you think it will be a problem if the writer uses it in the context of a conversation? I am telling a short story in which the slang is important to the meaning I seek to convey.

I've seen one Personal Statement that dedicated a good length of time to a conversation and it didn't really work very well. That being said, I'll have to repeat what I typically state in regards to this; I can't exercise judgment until I see the PS and how the slang works in the context of the PS. I'll tell you right now, no matter how crucial the slang is to the PS, if the adcomm reading it can't understand it it's not worth putting it in.

I can see the problem in deciding whether slang works or not. When I finish, would you be willing to read it and make suggestions?

I suppose I wouldn't mind.

I take it that you mean to put it in quotation marks. That certainly would help, but it still is quite risky.

Oh, definitely! And I understand it's still a little risky, but the way I see it, they read thousands of personal statements. I need something to help me stand out. Besides, all individuals who try to compose excellent personal statements take risks right?

I'm sure that there are tons of risk-free yet excellent PSs. After all, tons of applicants spend years working for non-profits and want to be lawyers to save the world because of this. But I see your point. Don't forget that you can do risky PSs for reach schools, and risk-free PSs for targets and safeties.

You're absolutely right. That is a great suggestion and I will take it into consideration.
