Music.

Post by McNulty » Fri Jul 02, 2010 2:18 am

Who here has written a PS about music, or their obsession/fascination with it? Music subculture they've been involved in?

I'm contemplating the idea but want to make sure it's not a completely f'd up concept. I'd like to tie in the process of writing a song, where artistic decisions should have a reason, the difficulty (and thrill) of performing in front of others, the extremely competitive nature of getting a band off the ground, etc.

Who's done this?

Go for it. I did something very similar in my PS but I highlighted my experience in marching band and the difficulty of concentrating intensely and being berated by the band director for screwing up even one note or step.

I think if you can highlight how the process of writing a song is similar to what you will be required to do in your first year, the PS with a music theme could be a great idea. Just make sure you tie it all together at the end and that you leave room to discuss other things you have done within the context of the music theme.

Sounds like an interesting theme though. Let me know if you want any more advice!

I say go for it. I think adcomms will find it unique (or at least, I like to think so.. mine was about music as well)

How exactly is song writing similar to first year??
I am actually considering a similar topic as well, music has been a rather important part of my life, and I like composing instrumental music. i just don't know how that can relate to law school in any way, except the skills that are needed, or possibly how it has shaped my personality, but not directly to 'why law'.

I know right? Does sound pretty dumb when I say it out loud.

Didn't mean to come off as pompous.

Just be careful. There was an epically terrible PS posted here at some point about how this guy was soooo punk rock with his blue hair and the music was like, his symbol and when his high school tried to make him get rid of it, he fought the system and that's, like, soooo punk rock and that's like, what he wants to do in law school.
Ha. I'm definitely that not that "unique".

I think i'm probably going to write something along the line of music composition, and what i learned from it. some ideas that i may mention:

1.how i started composing since a little girl, and how the substance of my compositions has changed as i grew up
2.focusing on a piece i composed that inspired my view towards what a sound composition entails, and how is that similar to a sound law, basically an analogy of the two
3.then maybe talk about the technical side of things, what skills are required and how those skills equip me for law school as well.

what do you think about this? is it too cliched or too out of scope for law school? i think it might be quite risky if it's not well-written so i'm a bit worried.

Another problem is that I don't have any music-related activities on my resume except playing in the university orchestra. writing music is just a very personal hobby, if i pick it as the theme of my PS would it seem completely irrelevant to the rest of my application and hurt my chance?

hope to hear some advice!
