Re: Diversity Statement: Yemeni vs Yemenite distinction
This is just my opinion, but I feel like an ad comm would figure that you know the correct terminology for how to refer to your own ethnic group. I mean, if someone referred to himself as an American Indian, I don't think an ad comm would go, "Um...most people prefer 'Native American'-- ERROR!". Also, maybe it's just because I'm Jewish, but I feel like Yemenite Jews get mentioned pretty frequently and that the word doesn't sound immediately wrong.ashnicole wrote:I'm writing a DS about growing up with a Yemenite Jewish background. The correct term for a person from Yemen is Yemeni, but Jews use the word Yemenite (similar to Hebrew yemenit or temanit). Wikipedia even has an article Yemenite Jews, and I have seen it in print in various sources as Yemenite (only in reference to Jews).
My adcomm might not know that this is the correct (or at least common) term when applied to Jews and just think I am making a stupid error. Should I put a sentence/disclaimer in my DS clarifying? Or do you think they'll ignore it/figure it out/know it already?
