Penn Law Class of 2011

Post by rucoach » Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:29 pm

Haven't seen a Penn 2011 thread yet. How many of us are there and has anyone started looking for housing?

I'll most likely be there...super excited!!! Would kinda like to live close to the campus for the first year...so I guess I will be in University City.

I'm thinking UC myself. More important to be close to campus than the social scene.

UC is cheaper on average. Obviously, there are exceptions (see Domus).

:D Yo people! I will also be joining this Fall... for convenience, I'd thought I'd live on campus for the first year... Samsom West is what I applied for. Cheers....

Just a big about me: My background is in engineering and I taught public school for a couple years. I was deciding between NW, Michigan, and Penn.

Do you any of you guys know what field of law you want to study? When do people decide that? Cheers... looking forward to meeting you all. I am sure we'll have a great time.

I am thinking of getting a scooter next year... does anyone know how feasible driving one would be in West Philly? :) I want a dorky, Euro-looking helmet too.

I'm going to decide between getting a studio/1 bedroom or trying to find a roommate to keep costs down. What are you guys thinking on this?

i'll have a roommate, non-law student. so if you do go the roommate route i think that's the way to go. you'll definitely want the separation. 1 bdrm/studio is definitely affordable so it depends on what you're looking for. i was looking for a huge space, several floors, backyard, the works...so i went with a house share. if that's not what you're looking for, i would suggest getting a place on your own cuz an apt. with a roommate can get stuffy.

Ya think I'm leaning towards UC as well, might try to bring a car out and there seems to be at least a couple places with parking spaces that aren't too tough on the wallet.

Anyone have any ideas on good buildings/neighborhoods on that side?

Not going to Penn, but thought I could answer this - its much easier to have a car in Philly rather than Boston. Much lower population density; much more available parking. This will be particularly true if you live in UC (rather than CC).
I'm thinking UC myself. More important to be close to campus than the social scene.
There's a lively social scene in University City. Likewise you can live in Center City right across the Schuylkill and still be fairly close (walking distance) to campus.

I didn't mean to imply there wasn't a social scene in UC, just that proximity to campus is more important than proximity to the heart of Philadelphia. And yes, having gone apartment hunting last weekend, it is an easy walk from CC to UC (or at least some parts of CC).

I'm also thinking about living in one of the suburbs on the SEPTA line. The place I'm looking would be about a half hour commute, but my wife and I could get a two bedroom for $825 (no its not in Camden or something like it). Would I be crazy to not live in Philly?

I don't think you'd be crazy to live in the suburbs. A lot of law students with families do it. You would just have to be prepared to deal with the longer commute. If you know you'll be ok with that, it's not a bad option. It'll definitely be nice to have school life and family life separate.

As for the question about parking, parking in Philly isn't too bad. Some parts of UC have free street parking. In CC, if you want to live close to campus there will be permit parking and garages. Permits are only $35 for the year (you need to have PA plates) so it's not expensive but it can be hard to find a space sometimes. Garages are pretty much the same as other cities. Right now I live near the art museum and have free street parking but I plan on moving into the Rittenhouse area so that I can walk to school.
