Count me in for bball and football. Good to know other people are down to play. Basketball seems like it will work its way into my routine pretty consistently since it takes my mind off of what is going on and will distract me from the rigors of law school.

What's been your experience getting emails from him? He responded so quickly to my first email but now it's been a week since the second email I sent him and no response. Obviously the guy is busy, but a non-response certainly doesn't feel too good.

hm. i always get a response within an hour, a day at the latest. theres only one time i didn't get a reponse- when he offered to talk to me on the phone. i emailed him back with my number and asked if he would rather i called him at a certain time. I never got a call or any further response.

if you didn't get a reply at all, maybe he meant to get back to you later but forgot about your email. if its important, just send him a reminder. or try karman hsu.

Friendly reminder, future classmates: statement of intent to register is due by June 2. I thought it was due later, but it isn't. You can do that at http://www.ursa.ucla.edu.

It's just a confirmation that you're going to enroll: it takes about thirty seconds. No money to pay.

is statement of intent to register a binding thing? ie- do you have to withdraw from all other schools (WLs included) by the time you send it in?

besides that, is anyone going to the cocktail thing? got a weird voicemail from dean robbie (can i call him that?) today asking if im happy with my deposit decision and telling me theres a cocktail to meet other incoming students.

i think i saw something about it on the admitted students site but i forgot my password and can't log on to check to see what day it is :(

I can't see the statement again - it's weird that I can't look on it on the website. It didn't seem like it was binding - but be sure to read it closely. I've withdrawn from everywhere and am 100% committed to UCLA, so I just checked "yes" pretty quickly and wasn't looking for language like that.

I didn't know about any cocktail event - but I won't be able to get away from OK until August, so I guess the drinking will have to exclude the judgmental Mormon who secretly wishes he could have ten ;)

hornets tomorrow for sure. i hate the spurs, most boring team in the nba to watch. i'm really looking forward to a lakers/hornets series. but i gotta go with my lakers all the way.

For a split second, I got really confused because I traded for Pau Gasol on my NBA Live dynasty, so obviously a Hornets-Lakers matchup didn't make sense. ;) Great series all the way, for sure.

As much as the Spurs can bore at times, I have nothing but admiration for what they do. That team is loaded with quality players who know their role and never, ever discharge a firearm in a public space.

you're right. as boring as they are to watch, they really have a solid, consistent team. duncan is basically a microcosm of the entire team. expressionless, emotionless, laborious to watch. but ALWAYS delivers 20+ pt, 15+ rebound games. greg popovich, on the other hand, is a total asshole. he looks like the most miserable old man.

i really do admire the team, and i think that beside skill, their playoff/championship experience is what's keeping them with the hornets. however, i think the hornets are just too young and too good for them to overcome.

the parker/paul matchup has been a thrill to watch. highlight of the whole series imo.

Just found out about this forum...

I'm among the UCLA 2011 crew. Looking forward to it, though I'm sure I'll be eating those words soon enough.

I applied to the summer program as I fit one criteria (I'm 31. I remember when penny candy cost a nickel). A current student on Facebook told me that everyone who does the summer program raves about it so I figure its worth it to apply.

Random thoughts/questions:

I was informed that I got in via phone call from Rob Schwartz. I kept him up to date on my other scholarship offers but it didn't help.. No merit award for me. And wahts up with this cocktail hour thing? Was it only for a specific subset of studentes?

Is anyone else commuting? I live in Studio City, LOVE my neighborhood, have a great apartment with cheap rent that I don't wanna give up.. I'm planning on treating school like a job (a job that will cost me $90k of course) - get up early and beat traffic, go the gym before class, study, drive home after evening rush hour etc..

Go Lakers, I guess, but really I wanna know how many Dodgers games I can realistically attend in September.

I suck at basketball but I'll happily host the UCLA 2011 poker games.

I just realized that UCLA changed the dateline for the intention of registra statement. It was 15th June.. I wonder if I could stay on the waitlist after I submit the statement. And is it binding?

I didn't know anything about the cocktail neither.

I was informed that the June cocktail reception is, in fact, listed on the ucla admitted students site. Date TBA.

And I'd assume that the confirmation of intent to register is binding. It certainly appeared tha way to me when I confirmed my registration last night.

I called the office and a woman told me that she didn't think it was binding, but that she wasn't entirely sure. She recommended emailing the law center, which I did. I'll post the answer.

btw i lived in santa monica for undergrad and it was affordable and roomy. the bus runs straight down sm and takes you to ucla as well. nice. that was about 3 years ago though so prices may have changed.

Does anyone know anything about the housing in the area? I've never been to California and don't really have any way to get down there before I move in. I really, really want to get into Weyburn because it's so close to campus, but I don't really know anything about the other options. Does anyone know anything about:

Keystone/Mentone, Rose Avenue, Venice/Berry?

Rolloss here is an earlier post I made which may help you find some info about the other graduate housing options.

Personally I am applying for University Village Apartments. I drove around all the housing communities to check them out and University Village looked pretty new and nice at least from the outside. Location is pretty good too.

EDIT: Here is the University Apartments page. The photo they have there is pretty accurate actually.

Congrats and welcome! I also chose UCLA over NYU, and I think there are a few others like that too. But yeah, if you feel good about the decision then that's what matters most right? :D

miked wrote:So i'm coming to UCLA. I decided saturday after looking at pics someone posted on this site. What is weyburn like..how far from the law school? and are the rooms really that tiny?

Welcome to you too! By any chance were those some of my pics?

Weyburn is pretty close to the law school - closest among the graduate housing by far. Weyburn is actually on/adjacent to UCLA campus; the other grad housing are about 4-5 miles away. Some housing have access to the UCLA campus shuttle, some do not, but whether you opt for shuttle or bus it's about a 20-30 minute ride. Shuttles run hourly; bus runs every 10 minutes.

I don't know how small the rooms are, but on the Weyburn info page, they pretty much say no queen beds allowed...

UCLA Housing Website wrote:Please do not bring the following items as they are not allowed in the apartments:

*Barbecues
*Waterbeds
*Queen-size or larger beds
*Loft kits
*Washing machines or clothes dryers
*Any pets or other animals. "Service Animals" are accommodated.

Here are some useful links:

UCLA "Ask Housing" page - lots of FAQs, you can search too

Bouzouki101 wrote:On another note, anybody know where the housing application is/when it's due?

Bouzouki, the application can be found from the main housing page, click on "My Housing." On that page, select the app you need.

I don't know when it is due, but I was told by the admissions office to do it as soon as possible. There is a $30 non-refundable fee too.

I was also told its nonbinding. you can still consider other schools, remain on waitlists after you send in the confirmation form.

and i was wrong about lottery applicants not hearing until August for Weyburn. the law school checked with housing and they said we should begin to hear by July (but they'll still consider lottery applicants later on if you don't get an offer in july so you won't be getting a notice if you dont get an apartment).
