I have fox for torts, too. i think we're section 2. the course number next to torts says L08.-2001-002. and i think the 002 is our section number.

no idea on whether the syllabus is available for the classes. anyone else?

I see. Thank you.

The ratemyprofessor.com reviews don't look to hot for Adler or Fox. :(

I found the first assignments (and textbook listings) for at least two of my classes by going to the professors' NYU faculty pages and clicking on the course name.

Stavand - Section 3 here also, with section 7 lawyering.

Faculty evaluations are on that site...

Looks like Epstein has the lowest ratings of section 3, but the other two look great.

Yeah, but if the faculty reviews are also bad for Epstein (who I would have loved to have, since I nearly went to Chicago) then that makes me feel at least a little better about Fox and Adler. Maybe the crazy genius types get bad reviews? I don't know too much about Fox/Adler yet.

Also, looks like McKenzie won a teaching award last year. That's got to be a good thing, especially since he's one of the youngest professors we have. http://www.law.nyu.edu/news/3PROFS_PODELL_AWARDS

Good find--it sounds like Procedure might be pretty decent. From the reviews I read, Adler teaches using powerpoint and Fox teaches/reads from the book (she's described as "like a grandmother"). There's a syllabus up there for Fox (Torts), but it's from 2006.

Also in section 2. Hopefully Adler/Fox won't be too bad. You know, on like course evaluations the averages can really skew things. If 80% of the class thought a prof was decent and 20% really bad, it can drag down an average so much. I remember from my undergrad I used to see profs with 5.0/6 who got like 80%+ 6's cause like 10% of the class gave them 1 or 2. It would be more helpful on the course evaluation page if it listed the distributions. Maybe I'll bring that up with someone once I'm actually a student :)

Section 4 here

Also I'm pretty positive Ellen Posner is a typo- we have Eric Posner, which is awesome.

Reviews for Sharkey and Chase are good too!

Section 2 here, Section 4 lawyering, I met Professor McKenzie at ASD, he was awesome, he was the one guy I was really hoping to have as a professor, so I'm pumped for CivPro...well...as much as one can be :)

Also, this an easier way of getting your books:
https://www.bookstores.nyu.edu/WKSCRIPT ... ER.PROCESS

Lists everything by your ID#

I like how the NYU Student Expense Budget allots $550/semester for "Books/Supplies," yet my first semester books alone add up to $591...even though the Lawyering books are for the whole year, that leaves pretty much nothing for highlighters, etc. Sigh. At least we don't pay sales tax on our books at the NYU Bookstore. (I think.)

How is everyone planning on getting there books? Amazon is cheaper for most of mine but they are out of stock on many. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Screw the allotment. I took out almost the full amount for loans ($67,500). Take out the default and origination fees and we're at $64,800, or $32,400 a semester. Take out tuition, the actual amount for books, the cost of the Mercer dorm for a semester and the misc. health/tech. fees and I'm at $2,412 for the Fall. That's without the highlighters.

$150/week. Ouch.

Anyone not gotten their medical disclosure forms in yet, or know what the penalty is if they're not in by Friday? The last doctor I saw was several years ago, and I've never been to one in my current city. This is going to be a hassle if I have to find a doc and get an appointment just so he can check off some boxes and stamp my form. Is there any easier way to do this?

Good question about where to buy books...
I'm checking out lawbooks.com now, and the prices don't seem to be much cheaper than the NYU bookstore...

Half.com seems to have them all and at good prices. Just make sure you don't buy used !

Yup, I did that calculation last night...then started wondering if it's possible to get a part-time job during school...then decided that would be grade suicide...

Section 5 here. Books are going to cost me $586 before taxes (and what's this about no taxes at the NYU Bookstore?)

I'm just going to stick with the bookstore for convenience.

From the bookstore website:

Students and Sales Tax on Course Materials
If you are an NYU student and are ordering course materials, you are exempt from paying New York State sales tax on these books. When you complete your order, you will see sales tax added to your total charge. As we process the order, we will verify your NYU student status and remove the sales tax from the total charge. It is important that you list your NYU id where prompted so that we can verify your tax-exempt status.

I assume it applies to in-store purchases, too, as long as you have your ID with you...

My books added up to $699 :(

For those of you who found good deals on half.com, did you do anything beyond the regular search? the prices i found were within $5 or so of the bookstore prices for the current editions. Though if you can get away with older editions, you could save a bunch of money.

Man $586? How am I at over $700? I'm gonna use half.com/amazon, it looks like lawbooksforless isn't any cheaper than the bookstore.

Usually no tax on Amazon either. The uncertainty about stock makes me nervous.

I looked through all the books in my section on amazon and found that they only had ONE book in stock that is "significantly" cheaper ($20) than the prices at the NU bookstore. The other that was $20 cheaper was temporarily out of stock. Combine those with the uncertainty of shipping and delivery and I'd rather just get them at the NYU bookstore.

I called last week when they hadn't received my form yet. I got the impression that I could just walk into the NYU health center and have them help me if my form doesn't arrive.
