Hi guys. I have been busy and away for a while. I just read this whole thread again to see where you guys are at in the process.

Just curious: is there anyone else at all in Queens? I will be living in Queens, close to my wife's work. The commute on the subway for me will be 45-50 mins each way. I am thinking I will just study on the subway. Is that unrealistic?

I have been out of school for a while. Just sent the transcript request and the college questionnaire to my undergrad school. Hopefully, they will process it soon.

I leave my current job today and the wife and I start driving from TX to NY on Monday. Then I am free until school starts! 8) I would like to announce my availability for any happy hour get-togethers or museum explorations any of you would like to arrange in NY till then. I will also be able to provide any first-hand info about the places near the school or in Queens, in case any of you want to know something particular. Just let me know, starting from about a week from now.

Iceman: It is going to be great having that extra time to settle. I will be moving 8/1. I don't know if studying on the subway is going to be very productive, but it will be a nice time to gather yourself, if necessary.

Jazzy: The wife and I are looking Lower east side and you can get an alcove studio or a 1br for around 2k. Not bad if you have the extra income. It is the fees that are killing me.

Not that anyone here seems interested in Queens, but.....a 1 br in the "nicer" parts of Queens (Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, etc.) is anywhere from $1500 to $1800, largely depending on how far from the subway the place is. Studios are about $200 less. So it is much cheaper than anywhere in manhattan, but of course the commute is more.

And Astoria in Queens has the same prices as above and the commute to NYU was 25 mins in my experiments. Astoria is also considered a good Queens neighbourhood. I liked the feel of Forest Hills and Kew Gardens more though.

Iceman, I am just curious why you wouldn't live with a roommate in the East Village for that price. Is living alone worth the 25 minute commute? I can understand paying $700 in Brooklyn, but why pay just as much to live even farther away?

Edit: Just saw your above post about living near your wife's work, sorry!

Did anyone else living in campus housing get their assignment today?

I'm in North Slope and only a 5 minute walk to Atlantic-Pacific Terminal, which has 2 express trains running to the W4th stops. Door to door, its less than half an hour, which isn't too far from me. I probably would have gone with the Brooklyn Heights or Cobble Hill areas, if I had found something there first in my price range, but this place was too good to pass up.

I'm not too worried about coming home late night. They're safe neighborhoods and I've never been a fan of using the library to study anyway.

JazzyJazz wrote:Question: do you think living off-off campus (i.e., Hoboken/Park Slope) presents difficulties when it comes to studying? I'm worried that late nights in the library just won't be possible (taking the PATH, for example, probably isn't so easy/safe at 3AM). Do you think this is going to be an issue?

Commuting home late at night will be a lot better if you don't have to transfer trains. The subway runs 24 hours, but in the middle of the night you may have to wait 20 minutes or more for a train to come.

I live in Park Slope, and it's super safe there. I'm a small woman, but I have no problem walking home from the subway alone at 4:00 in the morning (though I do realize that's risky behavior). I can't say I felt the same way when I lived on the UWS.

gedmem2 wrote:How far is the park slope commute? It looks like it is farther south than I realized, do you have to go up through the financial district?

As Aleph said, there are a couple trains that go straight from Atlantic/Pacific to W4, so if you live in N. Slope and can walk there, the commute is very short. I live farther south -- right by the F train, which also goes straight to W4. During normal hours, my commute is about half an hour door to door. The F goes through a tunnel from Brooklyn Heights to LES, then travels west along Houston to the Village. It does not go through the financial district.

Housing assignment today. Not sure if I'm pleased. I wanted the 12x15 rooms but got the smaller 12x12. Still deciding if having a room on the Broadway side is good or not. Pretty complacent about the assignment so I'll continue looking for something off-campus.

Vault, how do you know which side of the building you're on?

I was hoping for a smaller room with a terrace, but I'm pretty happy with my 2 bedroom 12x15 rooms.

Anyone out there looking for a roommate? I'd love to share a place within a 10-15 minute walk to school. I know it'll be expensive, but living 1) in the Village and 2) near school is worth it to me.

Male, non-smoker, very social, messy in my personal space, neat in shared spaces. I'd be willing to live with a guy or girl.

Haha. I forget my NetID like, once a day at least. It sucks because it's exactly 2 digits different from my grad school ID so it's uber confusing. Or maybe I'm just stupid.

Yeah I thought a terrace would be nice at first, but it's all about da feet. I got an F, I think, lower floors, but on the quieter side of the building.

How much are singles anyway? $100000/month?

There are numbers after the letter in your floor plan. 1 is on Mercer (the "quieter" side), 2 is on 3rd (the "average" side) and 3 is on Broadway (the "loudest" side). I wanted the F for the extra three feet but got C3 on the 19th floor. 12x12 isn't the end of the world but I'd like that extra room.

mmg and others looking for places off-campus...I'm game!

Edit: Any news whether these assignments can be changed? I'd be willing to swap with someone who has a bigger place and (for some ridiculous reason) wants the smaller one. HAHA

I'd rather have a smaller one if it had a terrace. My ideal place was the one with the living room in D'aug. Meanwhile, the CLS apartment shares all have a living room. Why housing is playing a role in my decision, I don't know.
