1L summer prospects from NYU should be pretty promising. Although D.C. is basically out of the question, NYC and Chicago are possibilities and secondary markets (Atlanta, St. Louis, etc.) LOVE 1L's since the 2L market is so slim. Even if you get a job at a top firm in Atlanta (a good possibility from NYU), they're paying $140k which translates to $28k for 10 weeks. Take out a couple grand for housing, few more for food and entertainment...$20k in the bank. I'd suggest using any savings from sumer employment for the NEXT year's expenses instead of paying off LAST year's debt. Paying off $20k doesn't do anything if you have to borrow $20k more to cover the COA, especially considering the 4% in fees you'll get taken out before you see the money.

Considering there are no overhead lights in Mercer, I think floor lamps are a must.

Good call on the lamps.

I found this pretty informative on projecting summer earnings.

hmm i want DC!

Anyway, I thought only about 25% of NYU's class received employment in law firms the first summer.

D.C. is just notorious for shutting out 1L's (candid conversations with UC and NYU Career Services Staff). Possible? Yes. Probable? Not at all.

Part of that comes from self-selection. Another part comes from unwillingness to relocate for a summer. I'm not going to proclaim that ANYONE from NYU that wants a 1L gig is going to get one. If you're near the top of the class during Fall semester and you look in the right markets (the secondary ones I spoke of earlier), your chances dramatically increase. Some 1L's decide to assist with research, work in a clinic or do some BS PI gig (UC actually encourages PI first summer so you don't get screwed if you find out it's not for you during your 2L summer...3L job market is rough). Up to you. I'm aiming to mitigate that $200k so I'll go to Atlanta if I need to.

Edit: Not a bad PowerPoint from NYU. You have to consider the tax refund you'll be getting. $28k in Atlanta (~$23k after taxes) is equivalent to that $36k in NYC.

You got it. Much better chance in NYC or Chicago...even better chances in secondaries.

dude. this same thing is driving me crazy, particularly since so many of the websites are outdated. from my limited research, im liking key bank and citi, but jeez, its annoying. the at the end of the day, they all seems relatively similar, particularly since the credit crunch has made so many lenders stop offering their best incentives.

Go back a page. I didn't look into Key Bank but between Citi and Wachovia...Wachovia wins out HUGE.

i havent made it to wachovia yet, but it depends on what "all the incentives" mean. i'm ignoring all the ones that depend on never being late with a payment since, well, i know myself...

+.25% rate reduction for auto-debit is a pretty nice deal and ensures that you'll never be late.

Well, after a long tough decision making process that culminated in the end of my cycle and placing a deposit at NYU...
I must bow out of this group/forum.

I've been offered a job working for a highly regarded Senator in DC that is just too good to pass up, especially given the energy of the election year...

Good luck to everyone this fall, maybe I'll see you there as a 1L when you are finishing up as 3Ls :)

Off-topic but a family friend was allegedly threatened with a suit by GULC for attempting to break the enrollment agreement to accept an offer off Penn's WL. Three year's tuition!!! Thank you, NYU, for allowing us to stay on WL's.

what the hell! I don't believe that. No school would sue someone for not attending. What school would want the publicity?? Is GULC that desperate? I'm glad I chose not accept GULC's offer.

Allegedly is the key word (I'm not trying to get sued too). My dad told me so I'll take it with a grain of salt but no reason for anyone to make that up.

Am I supposed to get an email stating my loan application status?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
