Yeah, I hated Vista when I first got this laptop. It kept freezing and I couldn't do anything about it. But, for some reason, I've had it on for about 5 days now and it seems to be working fine.

If you don't play games or anything, get a cheap one when there's a good deal.

I was thinking about getting a Mac, but I realized I'd feel so helpless with a Mac since I know nothing about Mac.

So, if you dont mind me asking, about how much did it cost? How much memory do I need? I really want to get something lighter even though they cost more because I have back problems as it is.

Oh, and I think Vista is ok as long as you are buying a newer system with it. I think most of the problems stem from putting Vista on older machines. But I could be wrong.

It was about $1000.. with tax $1100..
I got 2GB of memory.. it's been okay so far... when I need more, I'll just get another stick of RAM.

If you want something light... check out Macbook Air or Lenovo X300.. they are kinda expensive tho'..

I have about a 6-month old HP with like 2 gigs of RAM, running XP Professional. Nothin' fancy, but seems like it'll do the trick.

Yah I think those are both out of my price range-- as much as I'd like one.

How about X61? My friend recently ordered one for ~$900. I think it's just above 3 lbs (12'' screen, doesn't have touchpad/CD-ROM drive).
(Weight: minimum 2.73 lbs, up to 3.48 lbs (with 8-cell battery).)

Yah, Im thinking of one of those-- I was looking those up earlier. The Dell XPS M1330 are around 4 lbs--but I'm not sure I want a Dell. I'm also not sure how big a difference btwn 4 and 6 lbs the laptop will make since we will have all those law school books.

I'm pretty sure the degenerated disk in my back isn't going to like either, so I might as well get whatever I want.

OK, so here's the response I got from an email I sent asking about the academic orientation:

Dear [Rosstafarian],

Thank you for your e-mail. The academic orientation program that you mention is designed primarily for minority and foreign students to help them start networking before everyone else arrives. All the activities are designed for these groups.

Thank you for checking with us and please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions and we look forward to seeing you this fall.

Best Wishes,
[Admissions staff]

HAhahaaha. Well, then I guess I will be painting my apt that week and not attending any sort of orientation.

No invitation here, either.

I'll be honest, I'm probably just gonna play xbox or something.

I feel a "shadow orientation" week coming on... :-)

I hope this doesn't have the unintended consequence of socially segregating students into those who attended and those who didn't.

I plan on hooking up a miniature webcam in a shirt button and broadcasting it to your puters.

I'm pretty sure I checked the Caucasian box on my app, and though I was born overseas, I'm not a foreign student.

In any case, I'd probably just be wasting away my last free hours with World of Warcraft or RockBand, so it's all good, I guess.

This does not bode well for me. I am going to single handedly attempt to change this statistic.

Someone actually asked about that survey at our ASD this past March. I got the feeling that any mention of this now infamous Princeton Review survey is met with a thorough rolling of the eyes from actual students. No one was really sure where that figure came from or who was actually surveyed. Needless to say, no one we talked to studied 6 hours a day or knew anyone who did.

There's actually a semi-helpful thread on the Admitted Students' web board (on the official site) where a few students who transferred from other T1s to Cornell commented on this. From what I remember, they all pretty much agreed that studying at Cornell was not noticeably heavier or more intense than at their previous school.

Is anybody here who is going to Cornell into film? I want to revive my film group when I get to Ithaca.
